Full Time Faculty Positions in the Department of English

One full-time faculty position in TESOL and Department Chair (Associate/Full Professor) Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in ESL/ELL/EAP/TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Bilingual Education, Foreign Language Education, or Curriculum and Instruction (with emphasis in second language acquisition) or a related field. They will have research and teaching interests that encompass second language teaching and learning, language teaching and technology, bilingual education and literacy, and have made significant contributions to undergraduate teaching and undergraduate student mentoring, in addition to program, university, and other forms of professional service. The normal teaching load for a chair is 6 credit hours per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core courses in the area of specialization as well as courses in the General Education program. The chair will provide leadership for the department and articulate a clear vision for the unit’s future; assign faculty appropriate teaching assignments; lead curricular development, comply with, and prepare reports for accreditation; support procedures for program assessment and improvement for student outcomes; develop, update, and implement strategic educational planning; engage in faculty development, mentoring, and evaluation; prepare and manage departmental budget; prepare reports as assigned by the dean; establish and lead recruitment and retention efforts, and enhance faculty and student research and scholarship. Minimum qualifications: • A doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education in TESOL or related field • Strong administrative, interpersonal and management skills • Demonstrated record in successful administration and liaison with university and external organizations • Undergraduate level teaching experience appropriate to the rank for which candidate is applying • Evidence of teaching a range of undergraduate level courses in the areas of ESL/ELL/TESOL and language theory, practice, and research and other undergraduate courses in English • Commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship and use of technology skills to support teaching and research • Demonstrated skills in curriculum design and development • Evidence of ongoing commitment to research activities • Experience working effectively with a diverse student population • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment. One full-time faculty position in English with specialization in Translation (Assistant Professor) Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in Translation and/or interpreting or a related field. They will have research and teaching interests that include theories and application of translation, language teaching and technology, bilingual education and literacy and have made significant contributions to undergraduate teaching and undergraduate student mentoring, in addition to program, university, and other forms of professional service. The normal teaching load for the ranks of Associate and Full Professors is between 9-12 credit hours per semester, and they will be expected to teach core courses in the area of specialization as well as courses in the General Education program. Minimum qualifications: • A doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Translation or a related field • Excellent communication skills in English and Arabic • High proficiency in a third language • Undergraduate level teaching experience appropriate to the rank for which candidate is applying • Demonstrated excellence in teaching a range of undergraduate level courses in the areas of translation theory, practice, and research and other undergraduate courses in English • Commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship and use of technology skills to support teaching and research • Demonstrated skills in curriculum design and development • Evidence of an ongoing research agenda • Computer and media literacy including use of appropriate LMS and translation software • Experience working effectively with a diverse student population • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment. One full-time Instructor of English with specialization in TESOL/ESL/Composition and Rhetoric Candidates for this position must hold an MA in English, TESOL, TEFL, Applied Linguistics or related field, and demonstrate a successful record of teaching experience at the college level. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate introductory-level courses in composition and communication as part of the General Education program, advise students, and participate in university service. Instructors teach 15 credit hours per semester. Minimum qualifications: • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in ESL/ELL/EAP/TESOL or related field • Demonstrated skills in curriculum design and development • Five years of teaching experience in the discipline • Evidence of teaching a range of undergraduate level courses in the areas of ESL/ELL/EAP, including composition and oral communication • Commitment to excellence in teaching and use of technology skills to support teaching • Experience working effectively with a diverse student population • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment • Prior experience in the region is desirable The Department of English at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah offers a four-year nationally accredited Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Language, with three concentration tracks in Translation, the Teaching of English and in Literature. The primary goal of the program is to provide students with a thorough foundation in language and linguistics and a broad introduction to content and theories in the English language, and allows application in other linguistic contexts, especially within a comparative framework. The department also offers a minor in practical translation.
