Howard University is currently accepting nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Law.
The University: Located in the nation’s capital, Howard University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a doctoral/research university-extensive, and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Chartered by an act of Congress in 1867, Howard University is the world’s largest comprehensive university with a predominantly African-American enrollment.
The School of Law: The School of Law was founded in 1869 and is located in a park-like setting in northwest Washington, DC. It is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. Howard University School of Law is one of America’s leading centers for legal education and research. It has the distinction of being the nation’s preeminent institution for the education of African American lawyers. The School of Law has greatly advanced the cause of civil rights and social justice in the nation and around the world. Its distinguished alumni include Thurgood Marshall, the first African American United States Supreme Court Justice; Vernon Jordan, Jr., former President of the National Urban League; Douglas Wilder, former Governor of the state of Virginia; Sharon Pratt Kelly, former Mayor of the District of Columbia and numerous other national and international leaders in law and government.
The School of Law has approximately 400 students from the United States and countries in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. There are 60 faculty and administrators who remain as committed as ever to providing its students with the finest legal education available and to preparing the next generation of leaders. There is also a new, state of the art Law Library and remodeled and smart wired classrooms to serve students and offer unparalleled research and learning opportunities.
As the chief executive and academic officer for the HU School of Law, the Dean sets the standard for intellectual engagement and accomplishment by providing strategic vision for and operational leadership of the academic programs. The Dean works to advance legal scholarship and education – promoting initiatives within and outside Howard University; enhancing excellence through diversity in educational programs and faculty and student recruitment; and linking the work of law faculty and students to other disciplines, communities and interests within and outside the academy. He/she serves as the School’s public voice, articulating its contributions to local, state, regional, national and international communities.
The HU School of Law seeks a Dean with significant experience as a lawyer, scholar and visionary leader. Candidates should have an understanding of, and commitment to, the unique mission of the School. Candidates must be able to motivate faculty, staff, and students towards excellence, while promoting high morale and a positive working, learning and scholarly environment.
The successful candidate will be innovative and entrepreneurial. S/he will be nationally recognized with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience and a strong commitment to legal education and scholarship. Candidates without traditional academic backgrounds must demonstrate an ability to support faculty and to fortify an academic strategy and implementation.
