Job Description Summary/Essential Duties:
A second level career path position responsible for providing professional level work to the general student population in addition to an assigned specific case load of students within the campus/location advising department requiring the use of a considerable amount of independent judgement associated with academic advising/planning, articulation, career planning and other related services. Responsible for a specific caseload of students requiring more extensive interaction, record-keeping, and tracking of such students such as, but not limited to, TSI failed students, probation students (Level 1 & 2), student athletes, etc.
Adheres to strict student confidentiality guidelines. Provides academic advisement/planning to students and/or potential students using a variety of resources by DCCCD and other colleges, universities and related organizations. Advising of students may be inclusive of one-on-one interaction with students as well as online advising. Provides advanced advisement to a specific student caseload such as, TSI failed
students, probation (Level 1 & 2) students, student athletes, etc. Maintains constant
interaction and follow-up with these students and maintains all relevant recordkeeping
and tracking. Assists students in assessing academic skills, interpreting assessment results, and in course selection based on those results. Responsible for referring students for actual
testing to be administered by the campus testing center. Responsible for the actual registration, drop/add and withdrawal functions, including
the actual data entry into the registration system for each student advised. Some positions may be the campus TSI specialist requiring the advisement and dissemination of information to that specific group of students. Coordinates, analyzes and prepares reports related to the assigned specific caseload, recruitment and retention, and/or high-risk students. Coordinates the collection and updating of advisement and articulation information and materials. Provides students with a variety of information resources including, but not limited to, college catalogs, course/program selection guides, financial aid information, and referrals to the campus career placement center to utilize computer hardware and software designed to allow students to make decisions related to career and life planning. Participates in the development and implementation of a variety of student development programs and college recruiting activities, classroom visits for the purpose of attracting and maintaining students and/or potential students including special populations or to provide information related to the departments function and services. Coordinates a variety of departmental activities, requisition relevant resources, plan and implement special projects, and/or organize and maintain department records and
resources. May train faculty, staff and students on specific rules and regulations and institutional policies related to the area assigned (TSI, probation, retention, transfer, athletes, etc.) May coordinate and/or participate in the activities connected with orientation and
advisement. May provide guidance and direction to clerical staff and part-time advisors as required and/or in the absence of Director. Performs related duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree or higher with course work in social science, psychology, human services,
higher education or related area plus three years of experience in student development, higher
education, and/or academic advisement or Associate's degree or higher with course work in
social science, psychology, human services, higher education or related area plus five years of
experience in student development, higher education, and/or academic advisement. Knowledge
of computer technology and software applications in order to process registrations and to utilize
specific software related to student advisement. Ability to deal extensively and effectively with a
wide variety of individuals requiring excellent interpersonal skills, listening skills, and
communication skills in order to convince, influence, and direct students as it relates to their
academic goals. Excellent oral and written communications skills required for diverse
community. Ability to work extended hours beyond the regular 8:00 a.m. ?? 5:00 p.m. work day
during heavy registration peak times. The ability to provide quality customer service. Official
transcripts will be required.

Position Specific Qualifications:
Applicant must have experience advising health occupations students. Experience in Star Fish retention software is a plus. Job includes working with current allied health students using Star Fish for retention strategies as well as advising potential allied health and nursing students about the process of admission into these programs.
