Assistant Director for News College Relations Smith College Smith College is accepting applications for an Assistant Director for News. This position promotes the visibility of Smith’s vibrant academic and co-curricular life to a wide internal and external community through various and frequently updated communication tools. Specific responsibilities include content production and direction for the college’s primary news-focused daily website, The Grécourt Gate; editorial management of the college’s twice-weekly electronic digests of news and events; support for media relations and social media functions; support for publicity planning for selected college events; and external affairs projects as assigned. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Communications: Edit, manage and provide editorial direction for the college’s widely read and daily-updated news and promotional website, the Grécourt Gate. Conceive of, prioritize, interview sources, write, edit and post written and video stories for the web site on a daily basis. Assign stories or assignments for other writers, videographers and photographers, including student interns. Collaborate with colleagues in the News Office and supervise the production and distribution of the college’s periodic electronic digests of news and events. Support the Media Relations Director as assigned, including serving as a backup for social media content creation and management. Assist other departments and faculty with communications and promotional needs. Respond to media requests for information, as assigned. Event promotion: Provide planning, publicity and promotional support for major campus events with the goal of generating awareness for and understanding of the events. Advise planning committees on the communications tools available to promote an event. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of public relations or communications experience, preferably in a higher-education environment. Skills: Excellent news judgment and the ability to respond to multiple requests and generate high-quality content in a fast-paced editorial environment. Excellent demonstrated interviewing, writing and editing skills. Expertise with web content posting and creation. Review of applications will begin immediately.
