Essential Functions:

Include counseling with emphasis upon the total range of community college counseling services, including career and educational planning, orientation, transfer, veteran services, student recruitment, and personal counseling; instruction in counseling classes for job preparation, career planning, study skills, transfer preparation, or group dynamics; assignment also includes multi-media classroom presentations and advising, large group presentation, implementing retention strategies, integrating technology into counseling functions, working with students and faculty members and other counselors; participate in the implementation of the Student Success Act of 2012; involvement in committee work & planning in support of center moving to college status; implementation of student learning outcomes; and, perform other established duties and responsibilities of counselors. Assume such other duties as may be assigned by the Dean of Students. Duties will include extended day, evening and Saturday hours and assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Include master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR a valid California Community College Credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); AND demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualificaiton for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:

Extent of related work and professional experience; extent of potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; extent of demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population; extent of cross-cultural counseling experience; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff; and, extent of experience and knowledge of computer applications and technology related to counseling functions.

Conditions of Employment: 177 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is $51,992 – $78,276 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available. In addition, the district offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services and Campus President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the Campus President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
