The Director of Development has a primary responsibility for the strategic solicitation of major gifts for the School of Law ($100K to $500,000). The director is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding 150 to 200 prospects: alumni and non-alumni, as well as a targeted group of local and national corporations and foundations. Functioning as part of a university-wide development team, the incumbent will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with school-based colleagues and develop strong relationships with central development personnel and university trustees. This person will engage in direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and participate in planning and implementing school-specific initiatives. The Director of Development will oversee the School of Law’s national fund raising programs, and will offer counsel in planning and implementing its fund raising campaigns outside of Cleveland. This position serves as a member of the Development and Public Affairs leadership team and as a key advisor to the Associate Dean for Development and Public Affairs. Travel, both local and national, is required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Develop a portfolio of 150 to 200 regional and national prospects of alumni and friends with a giving potential above $100K and above; develop and implement strategic cultivation and solicitation strategies for each. Serve as primary development staff contact for chairs and other senior faculty; work with departments in the planning and implementation of departmental fundraising efforts. Identify large corporation and foundation grant opportunities, and develop strategic partnerships for these grants with School of Law faculty. Develop strategies to build a strong relationship with corporation and foundation partners, which may include the dean, associate dean and other senior staff of the School of Law, president, provost, and Senior Vice President of Development and University Relations. Participate as appropriate to recruit, train and manage volunteers, as appropriate, who will actively participate in the rating, cultivating, and soliciting of major gift prospects locally and across the nation. Develop and implement major gift prospect cultivation activities regionally and nationally in coordination with development and alumni relations colleagues. Travel to meet face-to-face with prospects and donors. Steward assigned major gift donors. Serve as a member of the senior development staff and assist with the development and implementation of program strategies and overall departmental development plans to fulfill the mission of the School of Law and the university. Lead fundraising efforts for specific Law School priorities or capital projects as determined by the associate dean and as required. NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform other duties as assigned. CONTACTS Department: Frequent contact with dean, associate deans, faculty, students and staff. University: Contact with the president’s office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions. External: Daily contact with donors, alumni, foundation representatives, community organizers/advocates, corporate executives, leaders in the legal community, and federal, state and local government officials. Contact with foreign visitors as required to perform essential functions. Students: Contact with undergraduate, graduate and professional students as required to perform essential functions. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY No staff supervisory responsibility. QUALIFICATIONS Experience: Must have seven or more years of progressive experience in alumni relations, development or related field (substantive sales, marketing, and/or legal experience). Experience in an academic environment preferred. Must have a proven track record of successful fundraising Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree required. WORKING CONDITIONS General office environment, some evening and weekend work hours will be required. Frequent travel, both local and national is required.
