The Position This is a new position created in response to the substantial growth of the organization. Since 2001, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies membership has increased from roughly 1800 to more than 3000 members, reflecting the strength of interest in the fields it represents. A full-time position, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful management of SCMS. The Executive Director will serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors and as a voting member on applicable committees. He or she will work to facilitate strategic directions for the organization, as set by the Board. The Executive Director will play a significant role in the administration of the Society, while becoming part of a vibrant community of scholars and teachers that comprise its executive council, its staff, and its membership. Please note that the organization’s home office is in Norman, Oklahoma. Local residence is preferred. As the position involves travel, please also note that all SCMS-related expenses will be paid by the society. Primary Responsibilities Include collaborating with SCMS President and other officers, the Board of Directors, and Home Office staff to develop organizational, program, and financial priorities to achieve the Society’s mission, including its strategic planning; representing the interests of SCMS to various constituencies, from similar organizations, regulatory bodies, and the media to the broader educational community; keeping abreast of major trends in the field; jointly, with relevant Board members, overseeing the SCMS budget and finances; proposing and executing initiatives to increase the organization’s financial resources and efficiency through fund raising and other efforts; assisting the implementation of the Society’s programs, including its annual conference; working with the Board of Directors and Home Office staff to assess members’ needs; creating programs and services of value and interest to existing and prospective members; developing strategies for membership recruitment and retention, including the promotion of diversity; managing member relations and communications; coordinating web content and digital/social media initiatives; and advising the Board about staffing requirements, organizational management, and the effectiveness of overall operations. Qualifications An advanced degree and a demonstrated record of strong and collaborative leadership and skills in fundraising are required. Familiarity with film and media studies or a related field is desirable, as are information technology skills. Priority will be given to applicants with proven success in staff and financial management and experience in representing and promoting an association or similar organization. Certification in non-profit or other association management is a plus. Commitment to diversity is essential.
