Assistant Vice President for Communications Public Affairs and University Relations The University is seeking a talented and creative communications professional to partner in the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan to showcase the University and foster engagement using the range of tools available. Under the leadership of Christina H. Paxson, Brown has adopted a strategic plan, Building on Distinction, that positions the University to attain higher levels of academic excellence over the next decade through collaborative integrative research and innovative approach to education. Brown celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding in March, 2014, providing a rare opportunity to communicate Brown’s distinctive place in higher education nationally and internationally and the enduring contributions of its faculty, students, staff, and alumni. Strategic Responsibilities: The assistant vice president will oversee the operation of Brown's communications in the office of public affairs and university relations (PAUR) to promote the University and build engaged communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The assistant vice president will work in partnership with the vice president of PAUR to develop and implement a proactive communications strategy to advance Brown's visibility and standing as a leading research university offering the finest residential undergraduate experience. Directing staff, systems and communications, the AVP will facilitate a coordinated effort to support the University's mission and engage the campus community, media, opinion leaders, government officials, alumni, parents and the general public. The AVP will manage the daily operations of two sub -departments responsible for creating and distributing content about Brown, providing leadership of the University's news, communications, web and social media functions. The AVP will collaborate with the vice president of PAUR on proactive and reactive communications, media relations and crisis communications plans, and work with the office of government relations and community affairs to develop and implement a coordinated media/government relations strategy. The AVP will serve as a spokesperson for the University, in consultation with the vice president for PAUR, and will oversee the department in the absence of the vice president. The AVP is the second highest ranking communications administrator at the University and is responsible for all communications in the absence of the vice president. Highly competitive candidates will possess the following: ♦ To showcase Brown properly, the assistant vice president must be visionary and creative. The AVP must exhibit excellence in news judgment, including crafting well-told, audience-appropriate stories that highlight the University’s distinctive features. The AVP must also understand the role of digital technology in the area of communication and have experience using digital technology to build awareness, understanding, and engagement. ♦ Sensitivity to the culture of collaborative complex organizations ♦ Broad experience in strategic communications, media, and public relations; advanced use of digital technology. ♦ Understanding of best practices in contemporary communications strategy ♦ Demonstrated capacity to be strategic partner, creative leader, and team player ♦ Creative approach to communication and story telling. ♦ Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred ♦ Minimum 15 years experience working on deadline-oriented news productions in a journalism and/or public relations environment including 5 years experience as a leader of a major communications group. ♦ Minimum 5 years experience in Web communications, including writing and editing ♦ Advanced understanding of web-based communication and social networks as communications tools. ♦ Significant experience in higher education administration, preferably in external affairs ♦ Strong leadership, management, and organization skills; at least 3 years of experience managing staff and budgets. ♦ Experience in developing and implementing successful media relations and strategic communications plans for a complex organization. ♦ Superior writing and editing skills and the ability to craft and articulate messages for a wide range of external and internal audiences. ♦ Excellent contacts in the national media and strong, successful experience in developing and pitching story ideas to journalists in print, broadcast, radio, and Internet media.
