Description of Position
Diablo Valley College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track ESL instructor to begin in August, 2014. The successful applicant will be well-qualified to teach all levels of ESL. Although the position is primarily focused on ESL, because the ESL program is integrated into the English department at Diablo Valley College, the department considers it very desirable if candidates are also well-qualified to teach a range of reading and writing courses, from four-levels below transfer ESL courses to transfer-level English composition and literature courses.

Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College’s shared governance processes.
The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):
1. Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR;
2. Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR;
3. A valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full-time instruction in English as a Second Language OR;

1. Demonstrated commitment to student learning and to promoting the success of all students in an open-access learning environment;
2. Demonstrated sensitivity and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultures, preparation, learning styles, and/or disabilities;
3. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and address needs of English language learners;
4. Training in and/or experience teaching a variety of courses within the disciplines of ESL and English across a variety of levels;
5. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in improving the success of underprepared students;
6. Commitment to professional growth and development, to innovation and improvement of teaching, and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the classroom in a shared governance environment;
7. Strong interest and ability in coordinating a learning center program that provides a range of support for English language learners, underprepared students, and colleagues working with these students;
8. Training in and/or experience with ANY OR ALL of the following: placement and/or assessment of English language learners; ability to provide professional development activities focusing on teaching strategies related to English language learners; experience working with adult schools; experience with learning communities.

The United Faculty positions are within a collective bargaining unit. United Faculty employees are required to join the union or pay an equivalent service fee. The monthly contribution is an agency fee of .55 % of gross pay + $2.50.

1. 2. During the campus visit, each applicant will be interviewed and may be asked to conduct a demonstration appropriate to the discipline. Selected interviewees may be invited to present an entire lecture in front of a class. Responses to the interview questions and demonstration will be rated by the interview committee.
3. Based upon the overall rating, a small number of applicants will be invited at their own expense to the campus for an interview with the college president and vice president of instruction.
4. After consultation with the interview committee, the college president will make the final recommendation for employment to the chancellor and the governing board of the Contra Costa Community College District.
5. Upon hire, the successful candidate must meet the conditions of employment. Finalists must provide verification of transcripts. TB test, physical examination, fingerprinting/conviction clearance and proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
