Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Ergonomics Center of North Carolina (Center) is a membership-based organization housed within the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University. Founded in 1994, the Center was created to make workplaces safer, more productive, and more competitive by providing practical, cost-effective ways to reduce or eliminate America's fastest-growing occupational injury and illness problem: painful, crippling musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The Center provides occupational ergonomics consulting, training programs and research for corporations, facilities, and individuals to support and enhance a company's ergonomics efforts. Each service is tailored to meet an organization's specific ergonomic needs and corporate goals. With extensive experience in ergonomics research, consulting, and training, the center helps in managing ergonomics and minimizing ergonomic risk factors in today's work environments.
Essential Job Duties: This position is for either an Ergonomist or a Senior Ergonomist depending on education and experience of the selected candidate. Either position provides ergonomics consulting, training, client management, workshop coordination activities, and supports research projects for the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina (Center) organization. It is a revenue-generating position with specific requirements defined to meet the financial needs of the Center as defined by the Center leadership annually. To meet the needs of the Center, Ergonomists perform a myriad of tasks for existing clients and in pursuit of new clients including marketing, relationship development, and Center promotion through article writing and publication, speeches and presentations. This position reports to the Director of Ergonomics Services and the Center's leadership team.
Minimum Education/Experience: Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field plus 3 years of field experience OR Master's degree in ergonomics or related field plus 1 years of field experience. Senior Ergonomist: Must have a Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field plus 6 years of field experience OR Master's degree in ergonomics or related field plus 4 years of field experience.
Department Required Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills (including public speaking) with the ability to proficiently create and deliver professional presentations and training. Ability to carry, lift, and set up equipment and displays for presentations, conferences, etc. Ability to perform the physical requirements of ergonomic site analyses.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Ergonomist or Senior Ergonomist should have experience assessing physical work areas using various evaluation techniques (including but not limited to the Strain Index, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), NIOSH Lifting equation, and Liberty Mutual Manual Materials Handling Guide).
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Required License of Certification: Must have certification in the science of ergonomics with the designation Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) preferred or a specific plan to achieve full certification within 6 months of hire for the Ergonomist level and Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) preferred for the Senior Ergonomist level.
