Job Description: The Department of Family Medicine of ECU, Brody School of Medicine seeks qualified candidates for Department Chair. The Chair is responsible for all planning, policy, operations and oversight of academic and research programs of the department. Also responsible for all patient care activities and quality of care for the department. The Chair has financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the department, extramural research funding received, practice plan revenues and expenses, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the department in accordance with applicable ECU, BSOM and ECU Physicians policies and practices. This position reports directly to the Dean of BSOM. This position works alongside the other department Chairs, and in associates with the Vice Dean, Senior Associate Dean for academic Affairs, Associate Deans and Assistant Deans. The Chair collaborates closely with the Executive Director for ECU Physicians and also interacts frequently with other key School, ECU, Vidant Medical Center and community officials. Responsibilities specific to the Chair of Family Medicine: Hold the Robert T. Monk Distinguished Chair in Family Medicine; Serve as one of the primary spokespersons at the School for the importance of primary care in today's health delivery system; Develop cohesive and mutually beneficial relationships with family physicians in the local area and throughout eastern NC; Provide leadership for continual improvement / transformation of the department's ambulatory care delivery system(s) to include monitoring and improving access to care; Appropriate clinical indicators; and patient experience; Assure the development of a platform for standardization of preventive and chronic disease care by well-formed clinical teams in a patient- and family-centered environment; Support development of alternative delivery models for optimal care provision in all practice sites; Develop cohesive and mutually beneficial relationships with family physicians in the local area and throughout eastern North Carolina; Provide stewardship for expansion and organization of effective and comprehensive primary care services throughout the region; Assist in development of new educational models that support more decentralized training of medical students and residents throughout rural eastern NC; Provide leadership for defining a rationale and productive research and scholarship agenda for the department. Department Information: Established in 1975, the Department of Family Medicine was among the first clinical departments of the BSOM and continues to be a principal focus for the medical school. The Department has 54 faculty members, including 39 physicians and 8 PhD faculty, 115 staff (including 14 nurse practitioners and physician assistants), 5 fellows, and 35 residents. The Department's most recent ACGME visit was March 2013. The Department offers accredited fellowships in women's health, sports medicine, and geriatrics. The Department is comprised of seven divisions: clinical services; residency; research; geriatrics; education; sports medicine; and medical student education. The Department received Level 3 NCQA as a Patient Centered Medical Home in 2010.

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Training: MD or DO degree, from an appropriately accredited institution. Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in North Carolina. Management education or training desirable. All academic work must qualify for appointment as Professor. Experience - - The ideal candidate will have: A distinguished record of teaching, clinical care, and research in a community medicine environment. Demonstrated success as a leader of a Department or Division of Family Medicine, of an interdisciplinary institute, or of an academic entity of comparable size and scope. Strong commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented philosophy with hospital administration and with colleagues in other specialties. Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students. A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and take appropriate business risks to achieve goals. Demonstrated ability to build consensus within an academic setting. Experience in the development and successful implementation of new clinical programs and services. Sensitivity to the balance between when it is important to advocate for the needs of the department and when it is important to place the needs of the medical school or another department at a higher priority than the department's needs. Ability to provide leadership in a time when change is the norm, whether predictable or not. Capacity to lead others through challenging changes. Demonstrated success over a sustained time in personal teaching, research, and professional service careers. Demonstrated experience in supervising the work of others in academic medical settings. Demonstrated experience working directly with senior medical school administration, hospital administration, and other organizational executives. Demonstrated experience in building effective teams to identify and resolve problems.
