GENERAL DUTIES

Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others. 

- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding

- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings

- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The College of Staten Island (CSI) is one of 11 senior colleges of The City University of New York and the only public college on Staten Island. CSI offers over 80 undergraduate programs, 24 graduate programs and, through the CUNY Graduate Center, participates in 7 doctoral programs. The College enrolls approximately 14,000 students and employs nearly 2,000 faculty and staff. Located on a 204-acre park-like campus that is minutes away from the cultural treasures of Manhattan, the CSI campus is the largest collegiate site in NYC. Fourteen neo-Georgian style buildings house 300 classrooms, laboratories, instructional spaces, and study lounges as well as department, faculty, and program offices. CSI boasts an advanced, networked infrastructure and is developing a high performance computational center that will support technology-based research, teaching, and learning throughout CUNY. The College is planning for enrollment growth and for the construction of new residential facilities during the coming five-year period.

Reporting to the chair of the Chemistry Department, the Research Associate will be responsible for the following:
- Purifies membrane peptides using reverse-phase HPLC and affinity chromatography.
- Clones genes into both prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression vectors.
- Generates peptides using solid phase or solution phase methods and purifies them to a high level of purity as analyzed by ESI-MS and analytical HPLC.
- Expresses heterologous proteins in E. coli using minimal media to isotopically label proteins for study by heteronuclear NMR.
- Develops protocols to form segmentally labeled G protein-coupled receptor for NMR analysis.
- Keeps detailed notebooks, writes progress reports, and publishes findings.
- Troubleshoots and repairs research equipment including analytical and preparative HPLCs, Applied Biosystems 403A peptide synthesizer, and Varian Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer. 
- Performs related research duties as assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience with the GPCR, Ste2p, from Saccharomyces cerevisia desirable
- Experience designing, cloning, purifying, and characterizing G-protein coupled receptors and their fragments
- Expertise in mass spectrometry, 3 dimensional heteronuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and circular dichroism
- Experience with peptide synthesis, DNA manipulation, protein expression, HPLC purification, and gel electrophoresis analysis
- Ability to read and analyze the current literature
- Experience in writing and submitting grant proposals to various agencies

COMPENSATION

$52,500 - $78,000

Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans.  Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
