The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre seeks an enthusiastic and innovative teacher for a full-time, teaching-stream appointment at the rank of Lecturer in the field of English Language Learning (ELL). The start date of the position is July 1, 2014.

We seek candidates who have a record of excellent teaching, demonstrates the intellectual curiosity to pursue novel and innovative teaching and learning methods, and are interested in establishing a long-term career at the Centre. Responsibilities include: 


  • Supporting faculty-wide initiatives on undergraduate writing instruction;
  • Working with units across UTM to develop writing and language-related curriculum and support for multilingual students;
  • Investigating, implementing, and evaluating innovative pedagogical practices for the teaching of ELL;
  • Supervising teaching assistants and assistant writing instructors; and
  • Engaging with the ELL, ESL, and multilingual communities in one-on-one and small group settings. 

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of appointment. Evidence of experience with English language skills development in the ELL population in a university or postsecondary setting and excellence in the teaching of writing is necessary. TESL certification or equivalent is an advantage.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointments at the rank of Lecturer may be renewed annually to a maximum of five years. In the fifth year of service, Lecturers shall be reviewed and a recommendation made with respect to promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer, which is a continuing position.

The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre is a hub for academic skills development on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. The Centre works collaboratively with faculty and teaching assistants to help deliver the best possible environment for learning in classes, labs, and tutorials, and students access Centre programming, including appointments, workshops, and study groups, to identify and develop the academic skills required for success at the University.
