The University of South Dakota seeks a Department of Music Chair for a full-time, eleven month, tenured or tenure-track position. The chair will manage department resources and department facilities, foster a professional and collegial environment, oversee recruitment efforts, and oversee instructional assessment. The Department of Music has a strong commitment to music education degree programs, in addition to performance and musical arts. Duties include: administrative and academic leadership for the department, teaching, research/creative scholarship, advising, and university service. Excellence in teaching is expected -- both in the classroom and in mentoring students outside the classroom. Other duties include: teaching courses in an area of expertise and serving on graduate committees as appropriate to appointee's qualifications, and additional assignments to meet departmental needs. Participation in Inclusive Excellence by undertaking outreach to diverse communities on campus and off campus is encouraged (multicultural student organizations, Native American community, GLBTIQ community, Latino community, veterans, women, etc.) All faculty are expected to be active in recruitment and in research/creative scholarship. Required Qualifications: DMA or PhD in area of music specialty; demonstrated excellence in teaching, research/creative scholarship; and at least three years of experience as a department chair, department head, associate or assistant chair, or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and/or experience with NASM and other accrediting bodies preferred. The successful candidate must possess the qualifications for an appointment as an Associate or Full Professor with tenure or tenure track. Rank and Salary: Associate or Full Professor, salary based on qualifications. Appointment begins July or August 2014.
