Collegiate Faculty Academic Program Director of Communication Studies Communication, Arts and Humanities The Undergraduate School Location: Largo Academic Center University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Academic Program Director of Communication Studies. UMUC is one of 11 degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). Working adults, military personnel, and other students around the globe are achieving their academic goals through UMUC's innovative educational options, including online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends. Currently, more than 42,000 students attend UMUC nationally, and an additional 37,000 students attend UMUC at on site classes in more than 25 countries throughout the world; about 58,000 students are active duty military, veterans, and their families. In 2012, UMUC had over 262,000 online course enrollments. The successful candidate will join the department of Communication, Arts, and Humanities (COMM) which has more than 28,000 enrollments a year. The Academic Director provides critical leadership for all aspects of the B.A. program in Communication Studies, as well as a minor program in Journalism and a minor in Communication Studies. The multidisciplinary Communication Studies major includes courses in the areas of speech communication, mass communication and new media; journalism; public relations; and advanced courses in aspects of business and technical writing. In addition, the Academic Director is responsible for overseeing general education and elective courses in the areas of Communication Studies, Journalism, and Speech. The Academic Director reports to the Assistant Dean for COMM, and works as part of a collaborative team including Academic Program Directors and Academic Specialists in the areas of Writing; History; East Asian Studies and Foreign Languages; Graphic Communication and Art; and English, Humanities, and African American Studies. This position requires a commitment to innovative, learner-centered education for adult working students. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Recruit, hire, and supervise highly qualified faculty who are focused on student success and who are effective instructors in online or hybrid (onsite plus online) settings; Oversee and manage the process of staffing online and hybrid courses for 11 terms per year; Develop and manage curriculum to ensure quality, academic rigor, and alignment with program and institutional goals; Provide direction for the use of learning outcomes assessment results and other data to ensure the continuous improvement of curriculum and instruction; Ensure that all student and faculty concerns are resolved in a timely, fair, and respectful manner; Supervise and work closely with the Academic Specialist for Communication Studies; Teach one onload course per year in area of expertise; Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of COMM. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A doctorate in Communication Studies or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university; At least three-years’ teaching experience in a four-year institution of higher education; At least three years administrative and/or managerial experience; Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills; The ability to interact and work with staff at all levels of a large organization; The ability to foster and develop internal and external relationships to further develop the program; Experience in presenting effectively to both large and small audiences; Comfort with the use of databases and related teaching and personnel management tools. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years’ workplace experience in such fields as Journalism, Public Relations, Speech, Mass Media, or other areas of Communication Studies; Online teaching experience with an adult student population; Experience with learning outcomes assessment efforts; Knowledge of innovative technology and other approaches for delivering higher education to working adult students.
