Primary Function of Organization Unit: Goals of Central Utility Plant Operations: 1. Provide the University steam and hot water through operation of the Central Utility Plant steam boilers and auxiliary steam and hot water equipment. 2. Monitor and maintain Central Utility Plant steam boilers and auxiliary steam and hot water equipment so operations are safely, reliably and efficiently sustained. 3. Provide the University chilled water through operation of the Central Utility Plant chillers and auxiliary chilled water equipment. 4. Monitor and maintain chillers and auxiliary chilled water equipment so operations are safely, reliably and efficiently sustained. 5. Operate the Cates Cogeneration Facility within the Cates Central Utility Plant to produce electrical power and steam to the campus. Goals of Utilities Distribution: 1. Maintain the University distribution systems for steam, storm water, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and domestic cold/hot water. 2. Provide emergency response to Utilities Distribution calls. 3. Provide in-house repair and replace capability for the steam, storm water, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and domestic cold/hot water to the University. 4. Provide in-house new construction installation and renovation capability for the steam, storm water, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and domestic cold/hot water to the University.

Essential Job Duties: This position reports directly to the Utilities and Engineering Services Director. This position has overall management responsibilities for the supervision, maintenance and operations for the Central Utility Plant and Utilities Distribution units. The Central Utility Plant ensures steam, chilled water and electrical generation for the 3 main campuses in Raleigh. The Utility Distribution unit manages the distribution of steam, chilled water, potable water, storm/sanitary sewer and natural gas systems. This position provides budgetary planning and control, managing of the utility assets, develops long range planning and interfaces with local public utilities. Serves as rotational on-call administrator.

Department Required Skills : Experience with combined heat and power operations, maintenance and construction is essential. Chilled water/steam generation and distribution operation experience is essential. Supervision of engineers and skilled trade staff is essential.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Prefer proven experience in an industrial or higher education power plant setting in a leadership role for 8 yrs. Preference given to candidates with PE, Stationary Engineer license, and university or campus setting. Prefer degree in mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver's License required. NCDL within 60 days of hire.
