Spelman College seeks teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. All tenure-track candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, be able to contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, assist in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment.

The Department of History invites applications to fill a tenure-track appointment, beginning August 2014, at the rank of Assistant Professor in Asian History, with a specialty in China or Japan, and a secondary field in one of the following: Middle East, Far East, India, job code TF0586. The ideal candidate will be qualified to teach, survey upper division, and seminar classes in the area of primary expertise, and eventually develop courses for the secondary field. Courses taught will contribute to the History department, the Asian Studies Program, and to the College’s commitment to global education. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach major core courses on a rotational basis.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in area of expertise, with a secondary competence in another. Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until January 10, 2014.
