Director of the University of Massachusetts Press
The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for the position of Director of the University of Massachusetts Press. The University of Massachusetts Press (www.umass.edu/umpress) is the book-publishing arm of the University of Massachusetts. Since its inception in 1963, the Press has sold more than 2,000,000 volumes. Today it has over 1,100 titles in print. The Director provides leadership, vision, and direction to the Press and coordinates the work of a team of book publishing professionals who produce and distribute 40 new titles annually, in both print and electronic formats. The Press maintains editorial offices in Amherst and Boston. The Director is a forward-thinking leader who is responsible for the planning and implementation of all Press activities and the supervision of staff in the editorial, design/production, marketing, and business departments. The Director actively represents and promotes the interests of the Press throughout the University, the academy more broadly, and the publishing industry and is responsible for establishing the strategic vision for all Press functions and leads and manages the publishing enterprise. This includes editorial direction, business development, budget planning and control, fundraising, technology applications, production, marketing, distribution, and liaison with all stakeholders in a highly collaborative workplace. The Director is expected to serve as a mission-driven change agent, who will monitor the rapidly evolving publishing environment, explore emerging alternate forms of publishing, develop new partnerships, and align the Press with the best practices found among university presses nationwide, while preserving and enhancing the Press’s hard-earned reputation for scholarly rigor and quality. The Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement on the Amherst campus and works closely with a faculty editorial board appointed by the Faculty Senate. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred); more than seven years of increasingly responsible managerial experience in book publishing, in higher education or the nonprofit sector, including experience in e-publishing and sales; working knowledge of all aspects of academic book publishing, including emerging digital models; demonstrated capacity to apply good judgment and sound business practices to achieve a sustainable publishing program; ability to create and monitor budgets and prepare successful grant proposals; ability to develop and manage staff in diverse functions to produce a cohesive whole; evidence of application of innovative thinking to publishing challenges; excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills; and proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and database systems.
