The position of Associate Director of Development- Athletics in the School of Arts & Sciences develops and maintains substantive relations with alumni, students, and friends of Tufts University and the School of Arts & Sciences to raise the significant philanthropic resources necessary to meet the School's and the University's endowment, capital and unrestricted annual giving needs. The office develops relationships with prospective donors through face to face visits, donor dinners, receptions and other events, as well as by facilitating meetings with deans and other members of the faculty. Direct mail, annual reports, publications and other means of communication are employed to cultivate prospects, develop awareness of the School's strengths, reputation, needs and priorities while setting the stage for major gift solicitations.


The Associate Director of Development -Athletics in the School of Arts & Sciences will be responsible for leadership annual and major gift solicitation of alumni, parents and friends in support of Tufts' athletics program. S/he is responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift-level prospective donors. S/he will manage a portfolio of 120 -150 individual major and special gift prospects. The successful candidate will develop and implement strategic plans aimed at maximizing each individual's support by working with colleagues in Advancement, the Athletic Director, coaches, faculty and high-level volunteers. The Associate Director of Development will be responsible, along with other members of the team, for articulating and communicating the School's needs and priorities within the context of the University's overall mission, goals and objectives. S/he will seek and arrange face-to-face meetings, work with volunteers and staff, telephone and/or visit prospects as well as identify and qualify suspects. The Associate Director will collaborate, as appropriate, with colleagues in Gift Planning, annual giving, and other departments to develop and implement comprehensive cultivation and solicitation strategies. The Associate Director will be expected to materially contribute to the successful achievement of the school's annual goal by soliciting and securing leadership annual gifts of $10,000 or more, as well as endowment and capital gifts in the range of $50,000 to $1,000,000. The ability to work under pressure and within deadlines is all necessary and important to the successful execution of this position.

 

 



Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum of  5-7 years of successful leadership annual fund solicitation experience closing gifts of $10,000 or more or related experience; or 1-3 years of experience successfully soliciting and closing major gift commitments of $50,000 to $100,000+ in a not-for-profit setting using personal, face-to-face cultivation and solicitation methods or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Advanced knowledge of spread sheet, word processing applications and proficiency in complex database platform required
  • Must successfully complete all appropriate background checks as required

Preferred Requirements: 

Preferred candidate will have 5+ years of successful face-to-face solicitation experience with some combination of leadership annual fund and major gift solicitation experience in a complex higher education environment.  Preference for a Tufts graduate and athletics fundraising experience a plus.  Preferred candidate will have experience developing cultivation strategies employing key volunteers such as a Dean or board member.  Preferred candidate will also have experience staffing and guiding cultivation and solicitation visits that engage key volunteers.  The preferred candidate will be a team-player who is an optimistic, resilient, motivated self-starter. Master’s degree a plus. Experience with Ellucian Advance or other fundraising information management system/database preferred.   


Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Frequent travel (approximately 6-8 days per month of local and overnight travel) and occassional nights and weekends required.  Travel schedule is driven by location of key prospective donors in qualification, cultivation, soliciation and/or stewardship stages.
