The Department of Classical, Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures at Queens College, City University of New York, seeks to make a tenure-track appointment in Arabic at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in the fall semester of 2014.

Responsibilities include teaching in the Arabic language program and contributing to departmental programs in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies as well as to the College's liberal arts curriculum.
Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching Arabic language courses at all levels as well as evidence of an active research program. Specializations may include any area and any historical period of Arabic Studies.

In addition to language courses in ancient Greek, Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Hebrew, our department offers a wide variety of literature and culture courses in English and in foreign languages, covering both ancient Western and non-Western classics as well as various modern Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. In providing linguistic and cultural knowledge we help lay a solid foundation in a liberal arts education for our students. Students who already know a foreign language are able to take advanced courses to enrich their understanding of the target culture(s). Sequences of our courses can become important components of majors, double-majors, minors, and interdisciplinary concentrations.

Often referred to as "the jewel of the CUNY system," Queens College is an urban school that offers a rigorous education in the liberal arts and sciences to a large and diverse student body. Our liberal arts, science, and pre-professional programs earn us high rankings in prestigious college guides. Graduating with the ability to think critically, explore various cultures, and use modern technologies and resources to address complex problems, our students have won prominence in many fields.

Ph.D. degree and native or near-native competency in Arabic and English are required. Preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. in hand at the time of application. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, ranging from $42,873 to $81,645 at the rank of Assistant Professor.
