Position Summary: The successful candidate for this position will join a team of professionals who together operate a corporate engagement portal for Michigan State University. Within this team, this individual will be primarily responsible for maintaining his/her own portfolio of corporate relationships, with accountability to drive those relationships to productive outcomes, including: research partnerships, start-up business opportunities; access to research centers, institutes and programs; facilitation of student hiring and internships; connections to faculty expertise, facilities and equipment; professional training; advisory board opportunities; networking events; and other University activities and programs that respond to corporate needs and interest. To achieve this goal, this role will include significant time spent in conversations and negotiations among the stakeholders to a contract, with an inherent objective of finding mutually beneficial terms for the corporate sponsor, faculty, and University. Establishing and maintaining a productive network of connections across the University is a critical success factor for the job.

Typical duties will include:

Negotiate with corporations to manage relationships (contracts & co-discovery operations) balancing contract terms to achieve the goals of the University and create business opportunities on a cost/benefits basis, working closely with contract managers in the offices who provide legal and policy guidance;
Develop relationship strategies that guide selection and approach to corporations to connect University strengths with partnering opportunities;
Organize events, tours, and meetings to bring companies on campus and introduce them to the University's faculty and other assets;
Establish and communicate best practices and establish review and implementation tools to measure success;
Coordinate with licensing managers in MSU-Technologies to ensure consistency in practices with companies and faculty and to maximize commercial value of the University's assests;
Leverage your own networking history to the benefit of the University, while building a larger network of relationships with key individual in business & research areas of opportunity for the University.

Faculty: Minimum Qualifications
Support Staff: Minimum Requirements
A master degree required;
10 years of experience working in research management, business development, corporate relations, or government relations with at least 5 years of this experience in private sector research and development;
Experience in participating in and/or negotiating and executing successful partnerships between a company and a University and/or small technology companies;
Ability to act effectively as a member of a team, working with others to develop strategies and solutions, engaging in a culture of continuous learning and teaching with peers;
Evidence of creative solutions in complex negotiation and an experience in negotiating to productive middle ground will be highly valued;
Evidence of high degree of organizational, verbal and writing skills;
Evidence of ability to balance competing priorities and effective time management skills;
Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.

Desired Qualifications: A doctorate degree in business, engineering, or the sciences; knowledge of the law (especially relating to contracts and/or intellectual property).
