Alfred State College has an opening for a Telecom Technician. The Telecom Technician will work in the Telecom group to support the college’s voice and data networks. The successful candidates will work with senior level network and telecom engineers to maintain the college’s infrastructure.
The ideal candidates will be highly motivated individuals that can work efficiently with a technical team in a highly demanding environment. The successful candidates will troubleshoot technology-related problems that might include hardware and software issues, equipment failure and network connectivity. Duties may include installation of new software, deployment of new hardware, training of users, troubleshooting hardware/software, troubleshooting network equipment, wiring, maintaining procedure documents and inventory/asset management. The candidates must have good communication and prioritization skills and be able to take direction from senior level engineers. Must be available to work a schedule that may include some evening, holiday and weekend hours when the college is in session in order to resolve telecom related issues. Some travel required between campuses (15 miles apart) and for training and conferences.
A Bachelor Degree in computer related field.
Experience with LAN/WAN and wireless networks.
Experience with Cisco switches and routers, ability to configure spanning tree costs, and priorities manually, QoS, ACLs, VTP security, and basic routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF. Should be able to configure Cisco switches/routers from the ground up with the above options.
Familiarity with fiber optic cabling and transceivers (GBIC, SFP), terminations a plus.
Knowledge of DHCP between client and server.
Knowledge of VLAN traffic configuration at the packet level.
Understanding of PoE, and what voltages and standards are used in a PoE environment.
Understanding of 802.11x and Radius authentication.
Familiar with the use of Linux/Unix systems, and know at least one scripting language within. PHP and/or Perl preferred.
Experience with Mitel phone systems
Experience with PBX’s
Experience with VoIP
Basic understanding of network security
