Job Description Summary:

Provide editorial leadership and manage all aspects of production of GW Magazine, coordinating the editorial process from start to finish. GW Magazine is published quarterly, with an international distribution to more than 250,000 alumni of the George Washington University.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications or other related field plus 5 years of relevant experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

5 years of experience as an editor is preferred.

Previous experience leading editorial production for a magazine, writing and editing magazine feature and news content and extensive knowledge of Associated Press style is desired.

Excellent managerial skills, attention to detail, proven ability to operate well under pressure and lead a highly collaborative process to produce a high quality product under tight deadlines.

Experience with project management tracking tools, Mac computer environment and Adobe InCopy.

Experience with a multi-layer content review process.

Experience managing staff and freelance writers, photographers, illustrators and consultants.

Experience overseeing advertising content for magazines.

Experience in digital communications and multimedia.

Higher Education experience preferred.

Job Duties
  • Exercises independent judgment to lead editorial planning for and manage production of GW Magazine. Coordinates content planning, seeking input from stakeholders across the university, and sets and oversees execution of the editorial calendar and publication schedule, ensuring deadlines are met and that content is timely and highly relevant to the university. Leads the editorial process from start to finish, supervising and coordinating the work of writers, editors, photographers, design staff, and others to implement various versions of the magazine until completion. Works with design staff and printers and mailing list providers to prepare GW Magazine for printing, online distribution and mailing.

  • Researches, writes, and edits copy for publication in GW Magazine; interviews alumni, GW professors and others for articles as needed.
    Some travel may be necessary when interviewing.

  • Administers the writing and editing of online version of GW Magazine and identifies opportunities to further the reach of the magazine beyond the print edition.

  • Exercises independent judgement to assign and manage the work of associate and assistant editors and interns as well as freelance writers, editors, photographers and other contractors as it relates to the relevant magazine or other communications product.

  • Provides oversight and planning for the budget of GW Magazine and coordinates advertising content with university advertising staff.

  • Performs other writing and publication tasks and other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
