Postdoc fellow – CRISPR screens in hematopoietic stem cells to study replication fitness

Location:
University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine
Open Date:
Jul 31, 2026
Description:
A postdoctoral fellow position is available at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to perform state-of-the-art CRISPR/Cas9 screens to identify novel therapeutic targets for treating hematopoietic stem cell diseases. Dr. Tong’s laboratory studies cytokine receptor signaling in replication stress, DNA repair, and ubiquitin signaling in hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow failure, and leukemia. Hematopoietic stem cells give rise to all circulating blood cells throughout life. Maintenance of stem cell self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation is regulated by complex signaling pathways. Aberrant regulation leads to bone marrow failure or leukemia. Genome integrity plays a critical role in blood development and the prevention of leukemia and ageing. This postdoctoral fellow position will focus on studying the mechanisms that safeguard the genome during DNA replication and investigating how failures in these processes impact hematopoietic stem cell function, which leads to bone marrow failure and/or leukemia. CRISPR screens with our expert collaborators will delineate a new understanding of stem cell fitness upon replication stress and point to potentially druggable pathways for intervention in the treatment of diseases with stem cell dysregulation. Vision

As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.

Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
