The Instructional Design Senior Specialist will initiate and complete instructional design/development processes as part of the Unite to Read Project (URP) a public humanities project responding to book bans. They will perform job duties with a high level of autonomy, proficiency in work, and resource prioritization, including planning and managing instructional design tasks from initiation to successful completion. These tasks include establishing and maintaining a public project website, establishing and maintaining a URP online platform (through Scarlet) to support participants and project partners in sharing and accessing resources for project efforts. This will include archiving, ensuring accessibility, and establishing shareable links for event recordings and resources. The Instructional Design Senior Specialist will also oversee undergraduate and graduate assistants’ material creation efforts. They will be using university approved educational technology tools and may train others in their use, including but not limited to Canvas, Scarlet, PebblePad, and Zoom. Using these tools, they will create, and train others in creating, multimedia materials to support learning and represent project outcomes through narrated presentations, screencasts, animated GIFs, data visualizations, infographics, course graphics, and explainer and animation videos. They will support networking and engaging with the project team and partners to establish workflows for materials creation, management, and dissemination to partner organizations to support the sustainability of project efforts.
In addition to instructional design duties, the Instructional Design Senior Specialist will also assist the project director in planning, data gathering, reporting and fiscal management of the grant. They will process payment of stipends to event participants and consultants, manage documentation of grant activities for the Mellon Foundation, and participate in project team meetings to record minutes, track tasks completed, and tasks that need to be completed. They will work with the project team to organize virtual events, and plan trainings, and they will establish and maintain a project calendar and schedule meetings and events. They will also create applications for project positions and manage application materials. The Senior Specialist will format and distribute a Unite to Read Project newsletter with content contributed by the project team. They will monitor project emails and manage correspondence with applicants, partner organizations, and participants. They will also offer consultations and support, following Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education model, for Arts and Sciences grants to incorporate digital tools, public-facing resources and online learning. They will participate in continuing professional training in instructional design, technology enable teaching and learning and contribute to electronic learning development projects to support Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education in their mission and may provide support and initial grant management guidance to faculty and staff in Arts and Humanities departments. They will perform other duties as assigned.
Required: Bachelor's Level Degree with a major in education or a related field and demonstrated experience with core instructional design areas, or equivalent combination of education and experience to demonstrate comparable expertise.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of four years combined relevant experience in instructional design, online course development, teaching and/or instruction.
- Experience managing production processes for curriculum and instruction projects.
- Minimum two years of experience utilizing a learning management system (LMS), such as Canvas.
- Experience training others in the use of teaching and learning tools.
- Minimum 2 years of experience utilizing a learning management system (LMS), such as Canvas.
- Knowledge of quality assurance standards in course design (Quality Matters or similar).
- Knowledge of universal design for learning (UDL), current WCAG accessibility standards
- Facility with basic HTML, CSS, ARIA and web design principles.
- Experience and competence managing multiple projects, balancing competing priorities and deadlines, and participating in diverse teams.
- Highly collaborative and team-orientated track record.
- Ability to effectively communicate with subject matter experts and other stakeholders.
Desired: Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, education, learning technologies, educational technology, or equivalent education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Management, fiscal, and/or administrative experience.
- 3-5 years of experience with online teaching or creating courses with Canvas LMS.
- An understanding of the practical application of course design principles and methods.
- Examples of application of quality assurance mechanisms in course design.
- Experience supporting online education & technology-enhanced teaching.
- Experience using and training others to use innovative technological tools to enhance teaching.
- Substantial evidence of working effectively both independently and as part of team.
The director of the Unite to Read Program at The Ohio State University seeks qualified candidates for a 100% FTE appointment (40 hours per week) in a unique role designed to bring instructional design skills to a Mellon-funded grant project provide grant management support for the project, and support other grant projects through short-term management, consultation, and creation of resources and workflow guides.
The Unite to Read Project (URP) is a two-year initiative, funded through the Mellon Foundation, that seeks to combat book bans, engage the public in defending and reading banned books, and unite diverse stakeholders in amplifying access to literature and ideas. The material-creation phase of the project brings together community advocates and university experts and resources to create quality materials that encourage the public to contextualize, read, and defend banned books. These materials form the foundation for “Beat the Ban” public programming, which connects advocates to success stories, strategies, and pro-reader opportunities, including workshops to use and create materials on banned books. “Beyond the Ban” programming highlights the craft and expertise of banned authors and illustrators (not just their experiences with censorship), restoring recognition of the vital contributions these creators make to American culture.
Co-hosted and cross-promoted events in these programming streams support connections and resource sharing among our partner free-speech, advocacy, and literary organizations. Stand-alone events raise awareness, awaken new advocates, and establish a pool of participants for a multi-week virtual URP Institute. Institute participants receive stipends and may apply to receive funding for proposed projects in support of program goals. Engagement with the institute cohort continues through monthly follow-up meetings, project support, and opportunities to serve as leaders and facilitators in URP virtual events. A final three-day URP Invitational Summit brings together advocates from the URP Institute cohort and project to work with representatives from partner organizations on future project possibilities. URP anchors these efforts in a culture of care and creativity through practices that focus on supporting sustainable, joyful advocacy.
This is a grant-funded two-year position with the possibility of continuation in a related OSU role after the end of the grant. The position calls for expertise in the development and support of online, hybrid, and in-person learning opportunities (Instructional Designer) as well as general management skills, a high level of organization, an ability to learn new processes to administer grant resources, and a willingness to translate this learning into resources to support others as well (Project Manager).
The pay range for this job profile is $58,700 - $77,200. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
