The Head Coach for Women’s Soccer will report directly to the Athletics Director or Designee. The Head Coach will be a positive, energetic leader with the ability to teach, motivate and recruit student-athletes. The Head Coach is responsible for coordinating all aspects of a NCAA Division I women’s soccer program, including but not limited to, managing day-today operations; recruiting academically and athletically qualified student-athletes; practice and game day preparation and coaching; budget management; hiring and supervising assistant coaches; assisting with fund raising and adherence to NCAA, Mountain West Conference and University rules; and developing positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, media, alumni and boosters while interacting successfully with department personnel and the University community.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and reinforce an environment of academic achievement, expectations, and success that supports and encourages academic progress and graduation. Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes.
- Manage designated resources within budgeted allocations, according to university and department procedures and in a responsible manner. Comply with all Mountain West Conference and department policies that relate to travel and budget.
- Prepare and implement practices and game day coaching strategies. Promote an environment that fosters individual and team development.
- Maintain an effective channel and level of communication and follow through, emphasizing relationships with sport administrators and support services.
- Operate the sport programs with integrity and within the scope and intent of NCAA, conference, department and university regulations.
- Evaluate and recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes who can be successful in an academic environment and will contribute athletically.
- Be a professional representative of SJSU and a role model for the student-athletes, the department, and the community.
- Foster a positive environment that encourages and supports sportsmanship.
- Hire, train, evaluate, supervise, and mentor assistant coaches and support staff.
- Foster positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, media, alumni, and boosters while interacting successfully with department personnel and the university community. Proactively engage in local and regional group meetings and organizations. Seek out public speaking engagements as often as possible to promote the program and university. Ensure all public statements are complimentary to the athletics program and the university.
- Solicit gifts and cultivate relationships with donors and prospects on a regular basis in accordance with the department’s fund-raising goals and strategic plan.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of collegiate, club and high school soccer programs
- Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills
- Strong commitment to the retention and academic achievement of student-athletes
- Demonstrated skill in training and instructing collegiate student-athletes
- Knowledge of current coaching methodology
- Advanced knowledge in managing intercollegiate sports teams that includes exercising independent discretion and judgement
- Ability to assist in the management of operational and grant-in-aid budgets
- Knowledge of and proficiency in University, NCAA and Mountain West Conference rules and regulations
- Willingness and ability to participate in fundraising, revenue development, and budget development
- Ability to organize and motivate student-athletes to maximum performance levels
- Ability to work, communicate and develop rapport with students, alumni, administration and community groups
- Ability to travel frequently throughout the year
- Possession of a California Driver’s License
- Ability to hire, evaluate, supervise and train employees
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent professional experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of soccer coaching experience or equivalent.
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent professional experience
- A minimum of 5 years Division I soccer coaching experience; Head coaching experience or equivalent
Compensation
Classification: Administrator II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $13,372/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,053/month - $16,221/month
The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
