·The Student Success Coach is primarily responsible for advising students throughout their enrollment at ASUN. This includes supporting students in the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs they will need to succeed. Using holistic advising approaches and student coaching methodologies, coaches will support students toward completion of identified academic, career, and personal goals. The Student Success Coach will also refer students to appropriate offices and individuals who can assist them in overcoming barriers to success. The primary focus of the Student Success Coach is to develop intentional, personal relationships with students, which are designed to enhance student engagement and academic success. The successful candidate must be willing to travel to all three campuses located in Jonesboro, Newport, and Marked Tree.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain an understanding of ASUN’s programs, policies, and administrative processes within assigned programs to assist advisees with understanding degree requirements and building schedules.
  • Implement assessment of academic advising systems that make efficient use of the EAB tools (SAP Academic Plans, advising rosters, registration for special groups, add/drops, financial aid warning, advising progressions check-ins, transfer check-ins, and special populations throughout the semester for a more holistic advising experience, etc.).
  • Ensure that the caseload of students develop individualized academic plans using Degree Works and Navigate. These systems are used to identify the student’s current academic status and steps required to reach their academic goals, including working with faculty and other college personnel to determine academic interventions and available resources.
  • Coordinate with faculty to encourage and appropriately manage early alerts to ensure students are receiving timely interventions with the goal of preventing students from entering SAP suspension.
  • Manage every student placed on SAP suspension to assist with completion of appropriate appeals and submission of documentation. This includes assisting the student with completing a revised academic plan with the goal of helping the student achieve a satisfactory appeal process.
  • Develop and build student relationships and provide coaching, mentoring, advising and support to encourage persistence and completion of academic goals.
  • Proactively manage the student caseload by scheduling and conducting sessions with students in multiple communication channels (e.g. in-person, phone, email, text, virtual meetings).
  • Participate in regular coach meetings and training related to academic advising, success coaching, system changes/updates, and overall student success.
  • Participate in at least one professional development training per academic semester.
  • Be available to students during scheduled hours (which may include some evenings or virtual office hours, weekends during peak enrollment periods, and when urgent needs arise). Comply with vacation black-out periods during peak enrollment times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take initiative in a fast-paced work environment and meet deadlines. Maintain positive working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds while working effectively cross functionally.
  • Commit to continuous improvement. In consultation with the Director of Student Success Coaching, develop an individualized development plan and proactively seek out opportunities for professional development and improvement. Actively participate in all required training.
  • Assist with New Student Orientation, group advising events, and other college events as necessary.
  • Within the first year of employment, achieve certification/credential as a student success coach.
  • Other Job Duties and Responsibilities

    ·Perform other duties as assigned.

    ·Each Success Coach is responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner which fosters teamwork and provides leadership to students and peers.

    ·Consistent on-time attendance is required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of experience working with college students or comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and experiences and a commitment to student equity.
  • Knowledge of Banner, EAB advising tools, Canvas and possess the ability to use technology effectively in the execution of job duties.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or similar.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising/coaching, student retention, or related student affairs experience.
  • Community college work experience.

    1976 - Arkansas State University-Newport (ASUN) founded as White River Vocational Technical School.

    1992 - ASUN merged with Arkansas State University-Beebe to become ASU Beebe/Newport. 

    2000 - Arkansas Board of Higher Education approved ASUN to be its own, stand-alone campus.

    2001 - ASUN hired its first Chancellor, Dr. Larry Williams.

    2002 - Gift received from Arkansas Steel and Associates of $250,000 to endow cultural programs.

    2002 - ASUN received initial national accreditation by Higher Learning Commission.

    2003 - ASUN enrollment exceeds 1,000 students.

    2004 - Gift received from Walton Family Foundation in the amount of $1 million, in honor of Lindley and Kaneaster Hodges Jr.

    2004 - Ground broke on a Student Community Center.

    2004 - The high voltage lineman technology program was created from a partnership between ASUN and the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas.

    2005 - Named by Community College Week magazine as one of the top ten fastest-growing public two-year colleges.

    2006 - Ten-year accreditation granted by Higher Learning Commission of North Central Accreditation.

    2006 - First fully online degree program offered - Associate of Arts in Business.

    2007 - ASUN assumed operational oversight for the technical centers in both Jonesboro and Marked Tree.

    2009 - ASUN enrollment exceeds 2,000 students.

    2012 - ASUN hosts "First Decade Celebration" in Newport, Marked Tree and Jonesboro.

    2012 - $1 million gift received from Fowler Family in support of Hospitality Services program.

    2013 - Dr. Sandra Massey named ASUN's second Chancellor.

    2014 - ASUN becomes fifth largest community college in Arkansas in headcount enrollment.

    2015 - 2500 STRONG - In Fall 2015 beat it's all-time enrollment record with 2,533 students.
