ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for ensuring that all Chemistry & Biochemistry buildings, equipment, and property be appropriately managed and executed for the following locations: Dittmer Chemistry Lab (DLC), Chemical Sciences Laboratories (CSL), Hoffman Lecture Hall (HTL) and Fisher Lecture Hall. The incumbent will be required to collaborate and coordinate with the Department Chair, Faculty and administrative personnel to carry out position responsibilities.
Responsibilities Include:
- Managing Dittmer (DLC), Chemical Sciences Laboratories (CSL), Hoffman Lecture Hall (HTL), and Chemistry-occupied portions of Fisher Lecture Hall
- Serving as the point-of-contact for Chemistry department members to report issues and liaising with the Service Center regarding any issues; ensuring issues are resolved in a timely manner by either the appropriate FSU central department or outside contractor
- Coordinating the placement, installation, and removal of large equipment in DLC, CSL, HTL, and Fisher; coordinating with Environmental Health & Services (EH&S) as needed
- Coordinating and performing routine maintenance of the equipment in the common use laboratories in Chemistry & Biochemistry buildings; ensuring all department locations are functional for research, education, and administration purposes
- Serving as afterhours emergency contact for building and equipment maintenance for DLC, CSL, HTL, and Fisher, as well as being designated as Critical Personnel during university closures
- Serving as backup emergency contact for the Chemistry & Biochemistry Stockroom
- Supervising and managing all building maintenance shop personnel in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department, and being responsible for hiring, evaluation, and training
- Serving as the department's EH&S liaison along with being the point of contact with the university's emergency response team
- Addressing and resolving any findings from both fire and safety inspections
- Acting as the department's worker's compensation intermediary - reporting injuries, completing paperwork, and notifying EH&S of any claims
- Managing facilities projects for the department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
- Coordinating new lab setup for the department by advising Chair or Director on available and appropriate spaces and working with relevant Faculty to determine the need for any renovations to office and lab spaces
- Coordinating approved renovations/modifications to existing spaces; preparing preliminary designs, cost estimates, material specs, and labor estimates based on drawings
- Managing lab decommissions when Faculty leave: working on the reallocation any useable equipment and supplies
- Working with the Chemistry Property Custodian and university EH&S to dispose of any remaining chemicals, send items to Surplus and/or dispose of any unusable equipment
- Requesting lab clean-up through Building Services and ensuring labs meet standards for new occupants
- Overseeing the department's vehicle fleet - scheduling vehicle use and managing all maintenance needs for the vehicles
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent and experience equal to four years. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
Licenses & Certifications:
- Driver's License, Class E
Who is an ideal candidate?
The ideal candidate for this position is someone with the ability to utilize problem solving and technical skills, with knowledge of processes, procedures, and methods used in facilities operations, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. This individual is able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, and convey technical information to both experts and laypersons.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience include:
- Over five years of experience in relational positions such as building management or facilities and shop oversight.
- Experience supervising.
- Knowledge of and ability to safely operate relevant trade and mechanical machinery, tools, equipment, and materials such as hydraulic lifts, lathes (metal and wood), etc.
- Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions, including standard research and laboratory procedures
- Exposure to principles, concepts, and methodology in designing, estimating, planning, and inspecting construction projects and managing project schedules
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, as well as related University policies and procedures
- Skill with applicable computer software and operating systems
- Knowledge of and ability to read and interpret blueprints
