Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:The purpose of the Global Engagement Office (GEO) is to coordinate, develop, and nurture the University’s international activities and to ensure that the University achieves its international goals as stated in its Strategic Plans. Specific activities include: developing and managing the Study Abroad and Exchanges programs; managing the faculty-led programs; recruitment, admission, and retention of international students; providing support services including immigration and practical training placement for international (F1) and exchange students (J1) and visiting scholars; securing funding for international-related projects for the faculty, departments and university; developing and managing outreach programs to the local schools, businesses and community. IPC serves as the liaison for the Interlink Language Programs and oversees the work of a position that supports international efforts for the UNC System institutions.
Position Summary:The responsibilities of this position include:
- Overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of ISS unit and training and supervising professional staff and student assistants.
- Working in close coordination with the Associate Provost to create policies and set procedures for ISS services and programs.
- Researching and developing programs and services designed to support the needs of international students and scholars.
- Maximizing the satisfaction and academic success of international students at UNCG and minimizing the number of legal, administrative, and morale problems affecting those students.
- Serving as a liaison with Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions, Academic Advising, Student Health Services, Career Services, Housing and Residence Life, Spartan Athletics, University Registrar’s Office, and other campus offices.
- Serving as a liaison with federal and state agencies, external sponsoring agencies, and local non-profit and community organizations in all matters that relate to the visas, work, legal status, and housing of international students and their dependents.
- Ensuring that UNCG and its international students maintain compliance with government visa regulations.
- Ensuring the Associate Provost for Global Engagement and other senior UNCG administrators are appropriately informed about international student numbers, issues and trends, and about key laws and regulations relating to the international student population.
- Assisting International Student Advisors with advising and counseling international students and scholars regarding immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, academic and English language matters, personal and financial concerns, etc.
- Duties as assigned. Duties of the Interculturalist may change over time as the Center grows to meet the needs of UNCG.
The ISSS Director will also be expected to exhibit patterns of service to UNCG and the wider community through participation in appropriate university committees and professional organizations and activities (such as NAFSA).
Additionally, this position will serve as team manager/supervisor to manage the staff and coordinate programmatic activities from International Student and Scholar Services. The position will also act as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Responsible Officer (RO). The position will report directly to the Associate Provost of Global Engagement.Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Outstanding intercultural sensitivity.
- Exemplary written and verbal competency.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Three – five years’ experience working in an international office within a higher education institution, including two to three years prior experience in international student & scholar services.
- Experience with international credential evaluation.
- Familiarity with U.S. visa regulations and regulatory agencies.

- Oversee functional and programmatic activities of both International Student and Scholar Services and Financial Coordinator of IPC; prepare reports to UNCG’s various advisory committees and boards, as well as the occasional external sponsors, domestic and foreign; compiling other reports as needed and requested from the Associate Provost of International Programs.

Key Responsibility:Designated School Official (DSO)/Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
- Review documentation and input information to produce and update SEVIS I-20 forms for conditionally and unconditionally admitted degree-seeking international students and DS-2019 forms for visiting scholars and matriculating exchange students throughout their U.S. sojourn.
- This process includes: approving validity of financial support documentation from international students (often involving currency conversions to U.S. currency) to meet federal regulations; reviewing student applications for employment authorization, OPT and CPT; reviewing student documentation for submission of request to United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) for change of status, extension of status and reinstatement; coordinating documentation collection with various constituents and agencies on- and off-campus, as needed; generate I-20s & DS-2019s on a timely basis so that students & scholars may obtain their visa to attend UNCG; create student records in the SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) database for visa compliance purposes.
