Associate Vice President for Campus Life
Iowa State University, a public land grant institution in Ames, Iowa, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next associate vice president for campus life (AVPCL). This is an on-site leadership role.
Iowa State University enrolls over 30,000 students and is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public universities in the nation. As a land-grant institution, Iowa State is a global and culturally diverse university whose students thrive in learning communities, undergraduate research, internships, and study abroad.
Reporting to the senior vice president for student affairs, the AVPCL will provide leadership for the department of residence, the Memorial Union, ISU dining, and serves as division leader for strategic and capital planning. The AVPCL provides direct supervision of the director of university housing, the director of ISU dining, the director of the Memorial Union, and a newly created director position overseeing capital projects for the division. They will oversee a $110 million budget. This is an in-person role, and the anticipated start date is July, 2025.
The public salary range for this position is $150,000-$170,000.
Qualifications
A master's degree and at least eight years of related experience are required. An advanced degree in business; hotel, restaurant and institution management; student personnel administration, higher education administration or a related area is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess ten years of experience in the management of a multi-unit housing operation or department within a large university operation; experience supervising several mid-management level professional staff; experience in residence life educational and developmental programming; and experience operating/managing an auxiliary.
The position requires broad knowledge of management techniques; experience in large budget development and financial management principles; facilities maintenance and capital improvements; and residence life educational programming philosophy and practices.
Additional desired knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Student oriented and willing to develop relationships with students.
- Effective time-management and organizational skills.
- The ability to represent the department to students/parents, board of regents, state of Iowa, university administration, alumni and the Ames community.
- Management and supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated effective staff leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- An understanding of a commitment to college housing, dining, and union management and an educational mission.
- Knowledge of financing and business management;
- Strong human relations skills.
- Effective management, motivation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
