Position Summary:

William & Mary Law School’s Center for Legal & Court Technology (CLCT) is a joint initiative of the Law School and the National Center for State Courts. CLCT’s fundamental mission is to improve the administration of justice through appropriate technology. In addition to courtroom and related technology, CLCT is heavily invested in examination of the legal issues stemming from new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet-of-Things. CLCT operates and manages the Court Affiliates Program for state, federal, and non-U.S. courts and supports William & Mary’s growing cyber-initiatives. CLCT’s far-reaching international activities include education, experimental work, and consulting.

William & Mary Law School’s Center for Legal & Court Technology (CLCT) seeks to hire a Senior Cyber Law Researcher supported by the Virginia’s Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), a General Assembly funded state-wide effort to enhance and enlarge cyber law research and education in Virginia.

The Senior Cyber Researcher will be responsible for the creation and leadership of an interdisciplinary research cluster focusing on cyber law and policy with some emphasis on the maritime, transportation, and defense industries. The incumbent may teach a course focusing on cyber issues with a legal orientation. In the 2024-26 academic years, the Senior Cyber Law Researcher will assist in creation and implementation of workshop symposia dealing with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity issues. The Senior Cyber Law Researcher will actively advise CLCT student Fellows in cyber security and AI research and publication and will also support CCI’s Costal Node student operations by serving as a mentor to the Costal Node’s regional student association.

Conditions of Employment:

This is a restricted position with salary funded by and contingent on CCI funding, which is in turn subject to General Assembly funding of CCI.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and or experience.
  • Demonstrated substantial knowledge of cyber technology especially cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
  • Significant teaching or work experience in cyber security and/or artificial intelligence.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical, and organizational skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Proficiency in delivering information clearly to others in both oral and written forms.
  • Knowledge of web-based/online research tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Possess a strong aptitude for logical thinking and intellectual curiosity.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • J.D. or substantial knowledge of the legal system and, preferably, experience working in the legal system.
  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in cybersecurity, or a related field or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of standard legal and technical research methodology.
  • Administrative and project coordination experience with the demonstrated ability to plan, manage and track projects through completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop positive, strategic working relationships among staff, external companies and organizations, and experts in the field of cyber technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality; handle sensitive information and material in a discretionary manner.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $91,800 commensurate with experience
