Job SummaryThis is an entry level job. The Custodian I performs minor floor care duties, including sweeping, dust mopping, and wet mopping. They also dust surfaces, collect and dispose of trash and recyclables, and use custodial equipment like vacuums and scrubbers. The role involves cleaning and disinfecting various surfaces, including windows, doors, tables, and furniture, in areas such as classrooms, restrooms, offices, and labs. Additional duties include transporting supplies, maintaining restroom and janitorial stock.
ResponsibilitiesCustodial Cleaning and Maintenance - 40
- Perform custodial maintenance duties of the institution¿s buildings and facilities, including the daily cleaning of restrooms, classrooms, locker-rooms, showers, office space, residential dorms and apartments, community rooms, exercise rooms, study rooms, community restrooms in the dorms, and other locations that are occupied by people.
- Clean hallways, stairwells, floor mats on a scheduled frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly).
- Wash windows, walls, trash cans, glass, and doors.
- Clean facility walls, mirrors, dust fixtures including lights from the floor with an extension duster, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, drinking fountains, facility signage, ceiling fans, window ledges, doorknobs, and kick plates.
Floor Care and Outdoor Cleaning - 30
- Perform routine floor care such as sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming. Ensure all floors are safe and free of debris, particularly in high-traffic areas.
- Maintain the cleanliness of hallways, stairwells, and other floor areas on a scheduled frequency (daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly)
- Sweep outside walks, porches, and stairways attached to the facility
Furniture and Equipment Management - 15
- When required, move office and dormitory furniture and equipment for cleaning.
- Ensure that furniture and equipment are properly moved and replaced after cleaning.
- Handle furniture and equipment with care to avoid damage during cleaning.
- Ensure the equipment is in good condition to perform required cleaning duties.
- Report damaged structures/equipment to the supervisor
Administrative and Operational Support - 10
- Attend scheduled departmental meetings and training courses as required.
- May drive a university car, truck, or golf cart as related to assigned tasks.
- Collect and dispose of daily trash and recyclables in all designated areas.
- Use appropriate tools and materials for cleaning tasks across the facility.
- Report any damage to structures, equipment, or facilities to the supervisor.

- Performs other duties as required related to cleaning
- Performing specialized disinfection and bodily fluid clean-up when required.
