Job Details
The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year. Students share a room in a university residence hall with other participants and interact with instructors and residence hall advisors through taking five academic classes, have support finishing homework with the help of tutors.
The Upward Bound Program Non-Bridge Summer Institute instructor will develop and implement content-area curriculum and serve as a role model for high school students who are participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. Classes will be held Monday -Thursday, June 9 –July 3, 2025. Orientation for instructors is tentatively scheduled for May 15, 2025.
The pay rate is $21-$23 per hour depending on qualifications. These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments.
Primary Objective: Prepare students in subject areas they may expect to encounter during the upcoming academic year with a focus on learning study skills that will help students succeed in high school and college.
Secondary Objective: Motivate students toward college and assist in building their self-esteem and sense of achievement.

- Develop a thorough understanding of the project's overall goals and assist with a challenging program of study that will promote success and generate confidence within each student
- Develop and implement content-area curriculum/lesson plans Monday-Thursday
- Identify any providing resources (e.g., reading material, instructional aides, etc.) needed to implement curriculum
- Assess students' cognitive needs and develop a curriculum to address those needs
- Provide opportunities for hands-on classroom activities
- Complete all administrative tasks fully and punctually. Tasks include but are not limited to completing weekly student progress and instruction reports, daily attendance, and final grade reports for each student.
- Always maintain sensitive student information
- Read and respond to all communication, stay up to date on change in schedules
- Must attend training prior to program and weekly staff meetings as required
- Be flexible and willing to do other duties as assigned
- Model and enforce all university and program policies
- Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations
- Document all policy violations consistently
- Report any inappropriate student behavior and/or violations to policies to appropriate staff
Must be available to teach Monday-Thursday, June 9-July 3, 2025.
Required Qualifications
- 60+ undergraduate hours at the end of spring 2025 semester
- Experience with educating a wide variety of students, as demonstrated in application materials.
- Bachelor's degree
- Graduate credit
- Subject area teaching expertise and experience, as demonstrated in application materials.
- Experience with Federal TRIO Programs and/or first-generation college students, as evidenced in application materials.
- A completed on-line application

- Will you be working for another department or office on campus over the summer? If yes, what type of position? How many hours per week will you be working?

- Will you be available to teach Monday-Thursday, June 9 – July 3, 2025? Please indicate if you are available the following “shifts” 8:00 am-noon or noon-4:30pm? If neither of these time frames work, please provide your availability.
- Please describe any experience you may have working with TRIO programs.
- Will you have 60+ undergraduate hours at the end of the spring semester?
- Please describe any teaching experience you may have.
- Please note that all applicants chosen for an interview will be required to prepare a lesson plan in the subject area that the applicant is applying for and execute that plan by teaching for 10-15 minutes in a mock classroom setting involving the search committee.
