Position Summary:

As a unit within the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Student Success and Advising Center exists to maximize every student’s opportunity for success through a personalized approach. We accomplish this through recruitment and outreach, academic advising, providing access to resources and opportunities, fostering academic and personal growth, leadership development, and career readiness, all within an inclusive environment.

This individual works as part of the Student Success and Advising Center (SSAC) team within the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). This position reports to the SSAC Director and coordinates position specific tasks related to academic advising, prospective student recruitment, and event planning. This individual is the lead academic advisor for Fashion Merchandising and Furnishings and Interiors. Under the direction of the Director, the position works closely with UGA departments such as the Exploratory Center, FACS advisors and departments, undergraduate coordinators, other UGA departments, prospective and current students, and other stakeholders. Additionally, this position interacts and collaborates with multiple constituents internal and external to FACS to increase enrollment and college visibility.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Advise, provide support and guidance, and communicate with a caseload of students about academic procedures, policies, goals, objectives, professional development, and problem resolution for assigned majors in the College from matriculation to graduation.
  • This includes meeting with students to recommend a course schedule, preparing advising forms and meeting notes, answering student questions, and maintaining communication with students. Advise applicable minors. Other majors may be added as determined by the Director and Assistant Director for academic advising case management.
  • Help to facilitate Dawson Drop-Ins weekly during fall and spring semesters.
  • Participate in Orientation activities, including tabling at Resource Fairs.
  • Assist with course scheduling and classroom enrollment management questions as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners in the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Meet with prospective students who have an interest in major related career paths.
  • Participate in major related recruitment events such as the Majors Fair, Double Dawgs Fair, and other opportunities to recruit students and inform influencers.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, and FACS Recruitment Coordinator to ensure a coordinated approach to student recruitment and retention.
  • Participate in committee work as needed at both the department, college, and university level.
  • Maintain a professional skill set necessary to be a part of a strong and collaborative team through professional development to enhance professional and personal capacity to perform job duties and responsibilities.

  • Support the Director and Assistant Director by working on projects to benefit the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Student Success and Advising Center.
  • This includes coordinating and executing student focused college events, assisting with student leadership enhancement opportunities, and other programs coordinated by the unit.

  • Conduct both academic coaching appointments and DCT (degree complete team) task that align with the Connect and Complete university policy. This includes the following:
    • Identifying and helping students work through obstacles getting in the way of their academic success
    • Helping students develop study skills and habits necessary to be a successful college student
    • Improve students’ time management skills
    • Assist students with developing short- and long-term goals for success and
    • Encouraging students to learn self-discipline, self-motivation, and self-efficacy.
