Position Summary:The person hired for this position will teach undergraduate classes in the College’s Sports Media Certificate program and in a new master’s program being developed by UGA’s Carmical Sports Media Institute. The Sports Media Certificate prepares students for careers in sports journalism and/or communications. Graduates of the six-course program work in roles ranging from beat reporters to local TV producers to media-relations professionals to play-by-play announcers to team-side digital hosts and social media producers. All courses are designed to help students develop knowledge and skills in reporting, writing and producing visual-forward storytelling about sports – anchored in journalism fundamentals and ethics.
The Clinical Assistant Professor in Sports Media will also support the Carmical Sports Media Institute’s extracurricular experiential-learning initiatives. These include a partnership with The Associated Press through which students have traveled internationally, with faculty mentors, to cover two Paralympic Summer Games and a Women’s World Cup as credentialed writers and photojournalists.
Candidates with a master’s degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:The successful candidate must hold a master’s degree or above.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:The successful candidate will have a record of excellence in the sports media industry as well as an established record of formal or informal teaching or mentoring in a professional or academic setting.
The Clinical Assistant Professor in Sports Media will possess:
- a grounding in journalism fundamentals, including ethics and professional standards
- an awareness of the role that marketing, public relations, and communications play in sports storytelling
- an understanding of how career pathways in sports media are evolving
- a willingness consistently to update their own knowledge and skills, as well as their teaching, to keep pace with industry evolution
Preferred Qualifications
Preferably, the applicant possesses:
- competency with high-level video editing software
- background in broadcast coverage of sports events and with designing graphics for sports-event coverage and storytelling
- direct involvement with the role of marketing, PR and/or communications in sports storytelling
- an understanding of differences and similarities between independent-media storytelling and team-side content creation
