Georgia State boasts one of the largest university police forces in the state with over 100 officers across all six Atlanta metro campuses. 

The department is accredited and certified by the following organizations; Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement (IACLEA) and the State of Georgia Law Enforcement Certification Program.

The Georgia State University Police Department is seeking a “ Public Information Officer “ to join the already awesome team in keeping the Police Department at the level of excellence that it has strived to become and sustain.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Works with Georgia State University Police Department and EVP of Finance and Administration to develop communication plans, press releases, brochures, fliers, etc. Manages communications projects; works with University Relations to create artwork, design and layout; posts and submits materials to social media platforms and media outlets. Partners closely with PRMS.
  • In Conjunction with Media Relations, receives and responds to media inquiries and questions: consults with management to provide appropriate response to media inquiries; provides and/or coordinates interviews as needed; assists in managing essential and time-critical communications; keeps management apprised of all media interactions related to safety & security.
  • Takes a lead role in coordinating special events and activities creates and implements communications plan for events; designs, produces and publishes publicity materials and articles; assists with event activities such as set-up and break-down as needed.
  •  Reports outcomes of news coverage: monitors and reviews print and broadcast media coverage regarding campus activities and services; compiles statistics, program data and other information; prepares and submits report.
  • Provides crisis communications meets with and consults with management to formulate response to crisis; determines issues to be addressed and formulates responses; provides regular updates to critical staff; manages and coordinates media interviews and press conferences; monitors the effect of response efforts and media coverage on public opinion and sentiment; prepares related reports and updates for management. Lead High Impact Incident Response Team, as appropriate.
  • Oversees Clery Act collection of data and reporting requirements.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including press releases, brochures, fliers, and proclamations; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including media outcomes report, press releases, brochures, media announcements and advisories, and articles; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Monitors all media sources for negative or positive mentions of GSU and GSUPD.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of related experience; or high school diploma or GED and eight years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience. 

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in one or more of the following fields: communications, media relations, journalism.
  • Previous experience in public safety operations.
  •  Previous experience with social media management.
  • Previous experience in crisis communications

The Georgia State Panthers are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and volleyball. The university announced in April 2008 that is will begin Division I-AA football in 2010.

The university’s innovative Touch the Earth program brings outdoor recreation ranging from backpacking, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, rafting and water-skiing to out-of-state snow-skiing and snorkeling trips. And WRAS, Georgia State’s popular 100,000-watt radio voice, is the most powerful student-run radio station in the United States.
