Description:

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety Operations, the Operations Manager helps ensure the safety of the campus community through effective leadership and oversight of public safety personnel and patrol operations during their tour of duty. This role requires leadership in directing security personnel, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a secure environment in compliance with campus policies and local laws. The successful candidate must be a service-oriented individual capable of interacting with a diverse student body, faculty, visitors, and other members of the campus community.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages and supervises campus security staff during their tour, and oversees all Public Safety personnel, including the tour Field Supervisor, Public Safety Officers, Bus Drivers, and student employees assigned to Public Safety.
  • Assigns duties, conducts briefings, and ensures all personnel are informed of daily operations and incidents.
  • Supervises the operation of the Hofstra Public Safety and Information Center, including the dispatch desk.
  • Monitors shift schedules and ensures proper staffing levels.
  • Prepares tour roll calls and special events coverage, ensuring adequate staffing.
  • Conducts regular patrols of campus facilities, grounds, and parking areas to identify and address security issues.
  • Oversees the daily inspection and accounting of patrol vehicles, medical equipment, radios, and other equipment.
  • Acts as the incident commander during emergencies, coordinating responses to fires, medical incidents, intrusions, or other critical situations. Communicates effectively with law enforcement, fire services, and other emergency responders when required.
  • Leads or assists in investigations of thefts, vandalism, or other campus-related incidents.
  • Communicates all critical information to the appropriate department or agency, and to the Associate VP for Public Safety and Community Engagement and/or the Director of Public Safety Operations.
  • Ensures compliance with campus policies, including access, parking regulations, and event security protocols.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ten years of related work experience.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community.
  • Strong critical thinking, reasoning, and decision-making abilities, especially in crisis situations.
  • Ability to work with various computer programs, such as Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior supervisory experience in campus public safety or law enforcement is preferred.
