SCOPE OF POSITION

The Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University and Harding Hospital are committed to enhancing the quality of care that our patients receive. The Inpatient Social Worker: Psychiatric functions within the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to provide patient care and supportive services that are directed at achievement of patient care outcomes, maximizing the patients involvement in his/her own care plan, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient focused care through the integrated skills of all treatment team members. Services provided include 24-hour crisis care, 24-hour inpatient care, outpatient services, ECT, TMS, and partial hospitalization for psychiatric patients.

Inpatient Psychiatric Social Worker services include psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, counseling, crisis intervention, and patient/family education. Social workers work within the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to provide these supportive functions, and also may assist with discharge planning to facilitate the transition from hospital treatment to continuing mental health care following inpatient treatment. Inpatient Psychiatric Social Workers manage their own caseload of patients and provide social work services to patient and/or families who receive inpatient psychiatric treatment. Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University and OSU Harding Hospital are committed to providing world class patient care by Interdisciplinary Treatment Teams. Psychiatric Social Workers are integral members of the treatment teams. The Treatment Teams reflects a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The Social Worker’s primary role is to provide inpatient psychiatric patient care and supportive services that are directed at achieving successful patient outcomes and maximizing patient involvement in their own care plans. Patients and their families will experience the benefits of patient-focused psychiatric inpatient care through the integrated skills of all treatment team members.

POSITION SUMMARY

OSUWMC Hospital Harding inpatient psychiatric social workers practice with adult or adolescent patients admitted to the Harding Hospital psychiatric inpatient units who have been hospitalized for debilitating or dangerous psychological and/or behavioral issues, such as severe depression, mania, psychosis, suicidal, homicidal, catatonia, co-morbid substance use, and other conditions. Inpatient psychiatric social workers are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, PCRMs, other social workers, medical, nursing, and social-work students & psychiatry residents, making recommendations for treatment, rehabilitation, and social service connections. Each patient admitted to OSU Harding is assigned a Psychiatric Inpatient Social Worker to manage their psychosocial needs during the admission. Each Inpatient Psychiatric Social worker maintains a caseload of patients to manage in collaboration with the attending psychiatrists and other members of the treatment team. The Inpatient Psychiatric Social Worker provides services to patients and/or families who receive inpatient psychiatric treatment. Psychiatric Inpatient Social Work duties include completing comprehensive mental health & drug and alcohol diagnostic assessments utilizing the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and ICD-10. Conducting ongoing evidenced-based suicide, crisis, and risk assessments. developing personalized, evidenced based treatment plans, conducting evidenced based interventions and groups to patients and families, providing crisis intervention and patient/family education. Social Workers work within the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to provide these functions, and also provide discharge planning to facilitate the transition from hospital treatment to continuing care in the community following inpatient treatment. If appropriate, Inpatient Psychiatric Social Workers provide other case management services, including linkage and access to necessary support services (e.g. transportation, financial benefits, medical and legal services, and community resources such as emergency food, clothing, shelter, etc.) The Inpatient Psychiatric Social Worker is responsible for serving populations with a variety of clinical, religious and cultural needs. Inpatient Psychiatric Social Worker collaboratively work with patients and team members in an effort maximize patient’s potential for the healthiest coping responses to their challenging situations, including timely and safe discharge plans.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire: Master’s degree in Social Work or Professional Counseling or related field and valid Ohio licensure (LSW or LPC) required. Eligibility for future independent licensure required. Independent licensure (LISW or LPCC) preferred. Pre or Post-Master’s training and experience in working with patients with mental illness and/or substance disorders is also required. Experience via an internship prior to completing Master’s level education may be considered. Experience with completing mental health & crisis assessments, case-management, and conducting evidenced based psychosocial interventions preferred. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays
