Position Description:

Texas State University invites applicants for the position of Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Professions. The department, located on our Round Rock Campus (RRC), offers a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy. In the fall of 2024, the department included 20 faculty and staff serving about 134 students. This is a 12-month appointment and includes scholarship and teaching responsibilities.

Texas State University’s Round Rock campus is centrally located in the healthcare nexus of our region, enabling Texas State to offer expanded collaborative opportunities with area healthcare facilities. The Department of Physical Therapy is housed in the newly constructed (2018) Willow Hall. Willow Hall is equipped with a state-of-the-art 3,500 square foot Physical Therapy Clinic with research space with a 10-camera Vicon motion capture system, force plates, and surface EMG system. An additional lab includes 921 square feet of dynamic research space with split belt treadmill and exercise testing equipment. Texas State University and Concept Companies are partnering to develop a life sciences incubator at TXST’s Round Rock Campus. The facility will focus on advancing research and innovation in the life sciences and medical fields.

Reporting to the Dean, the Physical Therapy college Chair is the Chief Executive of the department and is responsible for the implementation of the university, college, and department policies; the development, coordination, and administration of all academic programs and activities within their departments. The chair articulates the PT program’s aspirations to constituents inside and outside the university community, develop and implements strategic goals, promotes research excellence, and provides collaborative leadership. Dynamic leadership, clear communication, strong interpersonal skills, and a keen strategic vision are crucial characteristics required for success.Drawing on the assistance and advice of the faculty and staff, the chair has the lead responsibility for the administration of the department and physical therapy clinic, including preparing and managing the budget to achieve departmental goals. In addition, the chair is responsible for providing leadership for matters related to accreditation, teaching schedules, recruitment of new faculty, evaluation of faculty and staff performance, support for grant and external development opportunities, student advising, and formulation and implementation of strategic plans and policies. Required Qualifications:

Successful applicants for department chair will have the following qualifications.

  • Current rank of associate or full professor with eligibility to be appointed as associate or full professor with tenure.
  • Has an earned academic doctoral degree from an accredited university (i.e., PhD, EdD, DSc)
  • A licensed PT, or eligible to apply for licensure, in the state of Texas.
  • Active American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) membership
  • Experience in the effective administration of a university department to include curricular evaluation and design, programmatic fiscal and personnel management, accreditation, and strategic planning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of physical therapy education and practice advocacy and leadership at the state and/or national level
  • Demonstrates a record of scholarly excellence evidenced by publication record, external funding, and interdisciplinary research experience.
  • Effective teaching experience at all levels, including developing and growing traditional and online programs in physical therapy and related fields (e.g. DSc).
  • Demonstrated student success focused initiatives.
  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in building alliances and/or partnerships across the college, university, and academic and business communities.
  • Evidence of experience with reaccreditation self-study, annual reporting, and curriculum design specific to current and upcoming CAPTE standards.
