Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Matheson Fellow position. The Matheson Fellow is a full-time, one-year term position (with the possibility of renewal), starting at $21.54/hour - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Matheson Fellow position provides a recent Amherst graduate the opportunity to be an integral part of the Office of Institutional Research professional staff. Working collaboratively within the Office of Institutional Research team, the Matheson Fellow will provide analytic support to a diverse group of College leadership, faculty, and staff in order to facilitate the effective and strategic use of data in planning and decision-making activities. The Matheson Fellow will be responsible for designing improved mechanisms to share college data with campus partners, such as interactive dashboards and web-based infographics, with a particular focus on the College's survey data.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist IR staff members with the synthesis of raw data into insightful summaries to meet a range of needs. This work may entail identifying and collecting appropriate data, data cleaning, mining, management, and appropriate statistical analyses of data; constructing effective data displays to communicate key points; and presenting data, both orally and in writing, to diverse campus audiences
- Assist IR staff with the creation of interactive dashboards for key campus partners using the Tableau software suite
- Assist IR staff in the creation of a system to normalize historical survey data and integrate this information with the college's primary data sources
- Support the Director of Institutional Research & Registrar Services by providing analytical support to other offices as required
Qualifications:
Required
- Recent Bachelor's Degree from Amherst College
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent analytical ability and a familiarity with statistical methods
- Proficiencies in statistical and dashboarding software such as R and Tableau
- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills including prioritizing multiple tasks
- Experience working and learning within diverse teams, and a commitment to effectively serving a diverse student population
- Close, consistent attention to detail
Preferred
- A major in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a social science with significant quantitative experience or coursework.
- Programming skills, such as Python, are desirable but not required
