Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research seeks to improve the health of individuals, families, and populations by understanding the problems, issues, and alternatives in the design and delivery of health care services. This is accomplished through an interdisciplinary program of research, consultation, technical assistance, and training that focuses on timely and policy-relevant questions concerning the accessibility, adequacy, organization, cost, and effectiveness of health care services, and the dissemination of this information to policymakers and the general public.
The North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM) Is an Independent, quasi-state agency that was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly In 1983 to provide balanced, nonpartisan information on Issues of relevance to the health of North Carolina’s population. The NCIOM convenes task forces, or working groups, of knowledgeable and Interested Individuals to study complex health Issues facing the state In order to develop workable solutions to address these Issues. Through an arrangement with the North Carolina Medical Society, the NCIOM co-publishes (with The Duke Endowment) the North Carolina Medical Journal.
The mission of the NCIOM Is two-fold:
To seek constructive solutions to statewide problems that impede the improvement of health and efficient and effective delivery of healthcare for all North Carolina citizens, and to serve an advisory function at the request of the Governor, the General Assembly, and/or agencies of state government, and to assist In the formation of public policy on complex and Interrelated Issues concerning health and healthcare for the people of North Carolina.
The NCIOM addresses this two-part mission through coordination and sponsorship of research, collection of Information on major issues, the analysis of viable options, and the development of consensus within the membership of the NCIOM and the various stakeholders with respect to particular Issues on a range of solutions which are in the best interests of the public.
The North Carolina Institute of Medicine, with The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is recruiting for a full time Research Assistant (RA) to assist in the management of NCIOM project activities and to provide research support.
The RA will work under the direction of Michelle Ries, MPH, President and CEO (Principal Investigator) of the NCIOM, and the Associate Director (AD), NCIOM, Ayana Simon. The RA will assist with the publication of the North Carolina Medical Journal by collecting and storing information on contributors and monitoring contributors’ progress. The RA will support all facets of task forces and other projects planning, including organizing, implementing and evaluating activities and providing written documentation, under the supervision of the Pl/AD. The RA will compile and organize data from various sources for reports. The RA will
compile project information and synthesize research.
The RA will also be responsible for updates to the NCIOM and NCMJ websites, including data collection and report creation, and newsletter creation and distribution about NCIOM and NCMJ activities. The position requires substantial capacity to independently manage and coordinate research activities in addition to excellent writing skills. The RA will work with several groups of people, including providers, government agencies, professional associations, and other stakeholders and policy makers, and needs to have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The person holding this position must be capable of working independently in a self-directed manner.
This will be a 3-year Time-Limited position.
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:- Strong communication skills
- Written/oral/and in-person communication with project participants; participating in regular project meetings; note taking during meetings; report writing
- Ability to work on multiple projects at once and a high level of organization
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
- Knowledge of or experience in public health, social behavioral sciences, communications, or a related field.
- Experience providing project and meeting support
- Knowledge of and demonstrated skills conducting literature reviews and secondary data collection
- Ability to use WordPress or other website content management system
- Knowledge of public health/health policy

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
