Pay Range Information:Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.
Job Description Summary:The Or Initiative at Chapman University is a new program dedicated to fostering civil discourse among middle school, high school, and college students, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East conflict, combating antisemitism, and other politically contentious issues. By leveraging empirical research, evidence-based curriculum development, high-quality teaching, and community engagement, the Or Initiative aims to equip educators, students, and communities with the communicative tools they need to address divisive issues constructively and promote meaningful inclusivity.
The Assistant Director of the Or Initiative will play a pivotal role in advancing its mission. The position involves leading research initiatives with students and teachers, in addition to collaboratively creating impactful resources and developing and convening programs. This position also involves managing foundation reporting, project management, and obtaining institutional clearances for academic and communications research and programming.This is a hybrid position requiring 2-3 days per week in-office in Orange, CA (at Chapman University’s main campus) and/or at field sites in Orange County middle and high schools.
This position is annually renewable for a minimum of five years.
- Design, manage, and execute research projects.
- Support Or initiative Director in grant writing and funder development activities
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- PhD or MA in communication or an allied field (e.g., media studies, sociology, education, human development, public policy)
- At least 2-3 years of experience in research, program development, or a related field, preferably within an academic or nonprofit setting.
Skills and Competencies
- Proven ability to design, manage and execute research projects. Qualitative analytical expertise is a must; quantitative expertise would be a bonus.
- Experience conducting research, or working collaboratively with, adolescents and young adults.
- Strong understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, antisemitism prevention, young people and technology engagement, civil discourse, and/or related social issues.
- Strong writing skills and proven experience in publishing research.
- Excellent organizational capabilities to provide operational support to the Or Initiative Director, including strategic planning and managing key partnerships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a capacity for both collaborative and independent work.
- Knowledge of institutional processes for academic and communication research, including developing IRB protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with working in interdisciplinary teams and engaging with diverse student populations.
- Experience with grant writing, fund development, and foundation reporting.
- Experience developing educational toolkits or similar resources.
