Job Details
The Director of Community Affairs works closely with the deans of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine at our Harlem campus as well as with organizations and members of the Harlem community to help develop and maintain key relationships to strengthen Touro’s presence in Harlem and cultivate youth interest in the medical and health sciences professions. The recruitment and retention of underrepresened minorities and service to underserved communities is an important part of the mission of both schools on our Harlem campus.
Responsibilities- Serves as a TouroCOM, PathA, & TU NYSCAS MS/RT (and any other Harlem based Touro academic program) representative in interaction with local CBOs, Healthcare Organizations, Elected Officials, Civic Organizations, etc.
- Serves as screener for non-Touro entities seeking to use the Touro facility at 125th Street for meetings on onetime or regular /ongoing basis.
- Serves as CO-Chair of Community Service Committee that oversees TouroCOM students health-related interactions with Harlem (or Greater New York) Community.
- Serves as an advisor of TouroCOM, PathA, and TU NYSCAS MS/RT Admissions Committees.
- Participates in the Introduction to Cultural Competence Course for first year students.
- Provides outreach to URM candidates for matriculation to TouroCOM, PathA, and TU NYSCAS MS/RT, as indicated by Chairs of Admissions Committees and Dean of Students.
- Serves as staff to TU NYSCAS MS/RT, PathA, & TouroCOM Community Advisory Boards; scheduling meetings, assisting in fund raising efforts, facilitating interactions with TouroCOM, PathA, and TU NYSCAS MS/RT staff and students.
- Collaborates with the TouroCOM, PathA, TU NYSCAS MS/RT Director of Co-Curricular Learning and Student Engagement to identify co-curricular opportunities for students in community health and healthcare advocacy.
- Serves as a mentor/facilitator for Student Organizations’ Community Service activities
- Serve as chief reporter of the activities of the Department of Community Affairs and Diversity; producing annual reports, writing articles for publication in print media; Positive Community, Amsterdam News, Harlem News Group; assisting in proposal writing.
- All other duties as assigned
- Master's Degree preferred.
- Medical or Health Science background a plus.
- Evidence of community engagement.
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities
- Works in a timely and efficient manner in conjunction with others.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to prepare and present reports effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point, & Outlook
Travel
- Ability to travel as needed throughout the NYC metropolitan region and as needed to assist with elsewhere.
