Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of the Melton Center for Jewish Studies, the Community Outreach Representative fosters connections with the Jewish Studies community on and off campus to fulfill the Center’s mission of: developing, promoting, and supporting the study, teaching, and research of Jewish Studies by faculty and students at Ohio State; encouraging an interest in the study of all aspects of the Jewish experience within the Central Ohio community; and encouraging the growth of Jewish Studies programs at Ohio State.

The Community Outreach Representative arranges all program and operating logistics support for conferences, lectures, concerts, and visiting scholars; works with the Center’s Fiscal Associate on travel arrangements and honorarium payments for guests; supports Center Director and Office of Advancement on fundraising; works with the Center Director and Senior Department Manager on the Center's operating budget including utilizing Workday to initiate purchases; and manages communications. The Community Outreach Representative is the Center's primary student contact, managing scholarships and informing undergraduate and graduate students of scholarships, fellowships, and global education opportunities, involving students in Center programming, directing students toward Jewish Studies courses, and recruiting prospective students. The Community Outreach Representative reviews and edits all Melton Center publications; manages the Center website and social media; and prepares the Center’s publicity materials.

The Community Outreach Representative builds and maintains relationships with community partners; runs the Community Text Study program, which meets two evenings each month during the academic year featuring faculty instructors and oversees community programs off campus. In consultation with the Director, the Community Outreach Representative develops ideas for programs and grants; writes grant applications to fund Center projects; develops new, community-oriented programs; runs current programs and outreach programs, including meetings with community leaders to identify the needs and interests of the local community; and communicates with faculty and centers on and off campus to share program information and opportunities for collaboration. The Community Outreach Representative may liaise with the Associate Dean for Engagement in the Office of Engagement in the College of Arts and Sciences for potential collaboration. The Community Outreach Representative may supervise undergraduate work-study students as needed.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's Level Degree in Communications, Jewish Studies, or similar, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of two (2) years of experience with program and event planning and administration experience; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively as well as independently; meticulous organizational skills with exceptional time management skills; creative, hardworking, and detail oriented; proficient in the Microsoft Office 365 Suite, Zoom, and general administrative duties; capacity to learn new content management and database management systems and software.

Desired Experience:

General knowledge of Jewish Studies, experience working with college students.

The Melton Center features a multidisciplinary faculty internationally recognized in their respective fields, including History, Philosophy, Political Science, Dance, Music, English, Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Classics, Art, and Education, and produces a wide range of events. The Ohio State University has one of the largest Judaica library collections in the country, with a full-time Judaica librarian and over 300,000 volumes.
