About Us:

The Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (OVPIUE) supports institutional initiatives that enhance the educational experience of students in the University’s seven direct-entry undergraduate academic divisions. The OVPIUE is one in a range of Vice-Provostial offices that support the University’s Vice-President & Provost oversee the academic activities and operating budgets of the Tri-Campus academic divisions.


To support innovations in undergraduate education across the University, the VPIUE supports a robust profile related to five key pillars:

1. Teaching Awards & Grants: Recognizing and funding staff and faculty who demonstrate commitment to innovation and excellence in teaching practices.
2. Analytics: Leveraging data to enhance program planning, decision-making and student success.
3. Digital Transformation: Building and supporting systems that enable faculty, staff and students to achieve their academic goals.
4. Curriculum Development: Working with institutional and divisional stakeholders to develop and assess course and program level outcomes.
5. Teaching Initiatives: Stewarding the development of institutional frameworks and resources for innovative teaching practices, such as experiential learning, undergraduate research and generative artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

In each of these priority areas, the VPIUE supports a range of programs, projects and committees that advance these areas in unique, but interrelated ways. This role will primarily focus on analytics.

Your opportunity:

Working under the general direction of the Special Projects Officer, Academic Analytics, OVPIUE, you will be part of a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative group focused on enhancing undergraduate student academic success at the University. By utilizing existing data tools and creating customized analyses and visualizations, you will identify areas of opportunity to support retention, progression, and graduation for undergraduate students at theUniversity of Toronto. This will include supporting the development of new data visualization tools that combine EDI and student outcome data, creating standardized reporting tools for Divisional leaders that feature various student success data and assist in the review or and measurement of student success interventions. The position provides a collaborative, fast-paced, and challenging experience that will allow you to utilize and enhance your data analysis, data visualization, training, and project management experience.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining a dashboard for quick access to key performance indicators
  • Developing or modifying project schedules to expedite and/or compress the critical path to meet timelines
  • Determining key performance indicators to measure success
  • Analyzing market data to determine trends and effectiveness of programs and initiatives
  • Analyzing and developing program scripts to extract, reformat and analyze data
  • Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives
  • Training others on the use of supported technology interfaces
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree is an asset; or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years in any of; data analytics, business intelligence, research or student success ideally in a postsecondary environment.
  • Experience designing visualizations and/or dashboards using curated data in Tableau and/or PowerBI and a strong knowledge of effective visualization principles.
  • Experience with, andunderstanding of, higher education environments and interest in initiatives related to student retention, progression and graduation.
  • Skills in writing/coding programming scripts (e.g. R, Python, SQL) to extract, reformat and analyze data.
  • Experience synthesizing information by translating statistical and analytical results into easily understood terms and other informational materials.
  • Experience supporting data-driven decision-making by conducting detailed data analysis, producing complex statistical information, and analyzing large datasets.
  • Experience with, and understanding of, higher education environments and interest in initiatives related to student retention, progression and graduation.
  • Experience working with partners to develop project phases .
  • Demonstrated strong client service orientation and commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion in a professional environment.
  • Demonstrated training experience (ideally at the postsecondary level).
