About us:

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) is a multidisciplinary research community where investigators across engineering, medicine and dentistry collaborate to develop innovative solutions that address global challenges in human health. Located in the heart of Canada’s largest health-care research network, our faculty offer quality education to students who receive training in biomedical and clinical engineering. These highly experienced faculty have been involved in launching more than 20 start-up companies and driving three major biomedical engineering commercialization ventures. Our faculty and students routinely publish in top journals in the Nature, Cell and Advanced Materials family journals.

Your opportunity:

We are looking for a dynamic, highly motivated team member to help move our projects from discovery to application. You will join a lively, dynamic, creative, dedicated and a friendly groupof ~15 graduate students and post-docs within the Radisic lab at the University of Toronto who have developed technologies such as Biowire, AngioChip, AngioTube, inVADE, Tissue Velcro, Injectable Tissue in journals such as Nature Methods, Nature Materials, Cell, PNAS etc. You will have an opportunity to interact with all members of this creative team, helping to shape new research publications through technical help with experiments and supplies ordering. You will also have an opportunity to interact with the members of CRAFT center https://craftmicrofluidics.ca/, a collaboration between the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Toronto. The Radisic lab is developing new technologies in the areas of organ-on-a-chip engineering, tissue engineering and biomaterials. You will report to the group leader, Prof Milica Radisic. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and/or experiments
  • Preparing aliquots
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
  • Applying established standards when determining material requirements for lab set up based on timetables and requisitions information
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when restocking glassware in laboratories and/or store rooms
  • Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions
  • Ordering supplies with approval
  • Providing orientation to others on work procedures and practices

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Biomedical Engineering or Biology or Life Science or Chemical Engineering or a similar field or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum one year related experience in a laboratory
  • Experience in clean room microfabrication, such as soft-lithography, 3D printing and hot embossing
  • Experience with animal handling
  • Experience with AI Image analysis models such as BeatProfiler
  • Experience with PRC, Western blotting
  • Experience with microfabrication
  • Experience with immunostaining
  • Experience with flow cytometry and FACS
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Effective communication (oral and written) skills
  • Mammalian cell culture skills, specifically iPSC
  • Knowledge of basic cell and molecular biology
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment; demonstrated initiative and judgment; attention to detail; good laboratory practices
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols
