Washington State University (WSU) seeks nominations, applications, and expressions of interest in its search for an experienced and mission-driven academic leader with a high level of energy, enthusiasm, and drive to serve as the next Dean of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS).
As the state's land-grant research institution and one of two R1 public research universities, WSU provides a world-class education to more than 25,500 students through its five physical campuses and virtual Global Campus. The College of Agricultural Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) leads WSU's land-grant mission to serve all people through education, research, and service. With nearly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in CAHNRS at any given time across 13 academic units, 22 undergraduate, and 27 graduate programs, the College employs a large salaried workforce, including over 450 faculty and 600 staff. The CAHNRS mission is to contribute to improving the quality of life for the people of Washington state and the world. With over $105M in extramural funding in 2024, research at CAHNRS is as diverse as the communities, businesses, agriculture systems, natural resources, and landscapes of Washington state. CAHNRS also offers a variety of internships, part-time jobs and other experiential learning opportunities for its students that provide hands-on experience in diverse fields such as organic agriculture, apparel design, and viticulture and enology.
WSU Extension partners in every county in Washington and on the Colville Reservation to identify local needs and bring evidence-based practices to address complex issues. WSU Extension has faculty and staff in most academic units and subject matter centers in the college, and in three program units:Agriculture and Natural Resources,Community & Economic Development, andYouth & Families. In addition, four Research and Extension Centers in key locations around the state house research and Extension faculty from multiple academic departments as well as graduate students, postdocs and technical staff. Embedding faculty, students and staff in the communities they serve is an integral part of the CAHNRS' ability to support a more resilient Washington for future generations.
WSU and CAHNRS are the research and development arm of the country's second-most diverse agricultural economy, helping Washington sustainably produce and market more than 300 different agricultural commodities. CAHNRS is a leading driver of WSU research, contributing more than 31% of the University's extramural funding budget. The University is consistently ranked in the top five in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) research funding. CAHNRS hosts several plant breeding programs that have developed significantly improved crop varieties, including the Cosmic Crisp apple, which now stands as the University's top source of licensing revenue.
As a member of the University's leadership team, the Dean of CAHNRS reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President, T. Chris Riley-Tillman. The Dean will be responsible for budgetary oversight, academic program development, research support, Extension activities, faculty recruitment and retention, philanthropic engagement, vision setting, and strategic planning for CAHNRS. The Dean will nurture interdisciplinary partnerships within CAHNRS and across the University and cultivate relationships with state and federal agencies, tribal communities, industry leaders, and community partners.
Candidates must hold an earned doctorate (or equivalent terminal degree) and have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service that merits appointment as a full professor in an appropriate CAHNRS discipline. Successful leadership experience in higher education, government, or a related research institution is strongly desired, along with a proven commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate will possess the vision, financial acumen, communication skills, and entrepreneurial spirit needed to advance CAHNRS' teaching, research, Extension, and community engagement mission.

The anticipated compensation range for this position is between $350,000 and $440,000 annually.

WSU's student body statewide is ethnically diverse: 31 percent of our students are underrepresented minorities, and first-generation students represent nearly 33 percent of the total enrollment. About 15 percent of WSU students hail from outside the state of Washington and about 7 percent are international students. System-wide enrollment reached a record 31,607 students in fall 2019.
Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
