Vice President for Student Affairs
Founded in 1908, the University of Mary Washington (UMW) has built a rich history of traditions and accomplished academic excellence. Named for the mother of the United States' founding father, the University has evolved from its beginnings as Fredericksburg's State Normal and Industrial School for Women to one of the nation's premier, selective public liberal arts and sciences universities today.
With an enrollment of almost 4,000 students, UMW is a residential campus located in Fredericksburg, Virginia with outstanding students and passionate teachers, located just an hour from Washington, DC, to the north and Richmond, VA, to the south. Under the leadership of President Troy Paino, UMW has increased its retention rate and recruited a more diverse and talented student body while raising the school's academic profile. Dr. Paino is deeply committed to students, the student experience and their well-being and success. In 2023 he was recognized by the NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education “President's Award” and received the 2022 NASPA Region III President's Award.
The Princeton Review has named Mary Washington among "The Best 382 Colleges," Forbes has listed it as one of "America's Top Colleges," and Fiske Guide to Colleges regards it as a "Best Buy School." U.S. News & World Report has named Mary Washington one of “America's Best Colleges” and has placed it among the top ten public liberal arts colleges in the country. The University has been recognized as one of the top producers of US Fulbright students, and students, faculty, and alums continue to achieve this recognition in record numbers.
Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Student Affairs is a key member of the President's leadership team and the chief student affairs officer at the University. Offices and units currently in the Division of Student Affairs include Campus Recreation, the Dean of Students, Emergency Management, the Center for Prevention and Education, the James Farmer Multicultural Center, New Student Programs, Public Safety, Residence Life and Housing, the Student Health Center, Student Activities and Engagement, and the Talley Counseling Center.
The next Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) will join UMW at a critical time. President Paino was appointed to his position in 2016 and, since then, has accomplished a great deal in solidifying UMW's foundation as one of the nation's best public liberal arts colleges. Looking ahead, he is eager to launch a new strategic planning process and capital campaign over the next five years that will set UMW apart in the coming decades. The next VPSA will have the opportunity to provide leadership in both efforts. The VPSA will also lead the University's efforts to promote wellness, organized under a new Associate Vice President for Wellness. They will also be critical to shaping UMW's proposition that an engaging undergraduate experience centered in the liberal arts produces graduates who lead meaningful lives and impact the world.
To achieve these goals, the VPSA will embody several qualities and qualifications. First and foremost, they must be focused on students and have a demonstrated record of engaging with students in both formal and informal ways. Second, they should possess a deep understanding of the unique nature of UMW, including the history and historical significance of the institution. The VPSA must also be able to successfully articulate UMW's mission and generate excitement about the University among a diverse group of stakeholders, especially current and prospective students, and their families. In addition, the ideal candidate should clearly understand student development and best practices for engaging with and supporting students.
Outstanding candidates will also have a passion for liberal arts education as well as a strong appreciation for academic excellence in a student-centric environment, strong management skills as well as the ability to lead, mentor, and train staff to achieve superior performance, the understanding of the needs of a multicultural environment and experience building an inclusive campus environment; multifaceted experience engaging a diverse student body; and experience in developing and leading programs that make a difference in recruiting, retaining, and graduating students. Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with Academic Affairs are also critical to this role.
A Master's in higher education, or college student personnel or an associated field along with 10 years of progressive administrative experience is required. A Ph.D., Ed.D. or comparable terminal degree is preferred.
All applications, nominations and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in this profile.
Martin Baker of Buffkin / Baker is assisting UMW in this search. For fullest consideration, application materials should be received by March 2, 2025.
