Description

The Burt Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a Post-doctoral Researcher to spearhead research on coral reef restoration. Using corals that have been identified as having uniquely high thermal tolerance from prior research, the candidate will focus on enhancing coral survival, growth and condition (health). The candidate will lead lab and field based restoration efforts, focusing on corals that have been identified by other team members as having unique thermal tolerance through stress assays or which have been developed from selective breeding programs, as well as control corals. Th position will involve working on fragments and on sexually-produced larvae/spat, and conducting experiments to determine optimal conditions for survival/performance in lab (short- to mid-term) and field (mid- to long-term) settings.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. John Burt and will be part of NYUAD s Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS). Collaborating with a larger team working on various aspects of research around thermally resilient corals, the candidate will contribute to our growing body of research on the world s most thermally tolerant coral populations.

The position will begin in mid-2025 (circa May/June, with some flexibility for the right candidate) and will be for a term of two or three years (length depending on the candidate s interest, and potentially renewable depending on performance; funding is available for up to 5 years).

The candidate must hold a PhD in marine biology, ecology or related (must be completed by May 2025), an advanced SCUBA Certification with research based diving experience, demonstrated expertise in experimental design and quantitative analysis of ecological and environmental data, particularly in marine settings, experience in monitoring and analyzing coral condition and survivorship, ideally across multiple life stages and in lab (aquarium) and field settings, experience in coral restoration research, a track-record of first-author publications relevant to the position.

Applications will be accepted immediately. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter/statement of research interests and a CV/resume. If you have any questions, please email: kelly.bradham@nyu.edu

Organization

NYU's agreement with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to create NYU Abu Dhabi is the outcome of a shared understanding of the essential roles and challenges of higher education in the 21st century: a common belief in the value of a liberal arts education, concurrence on the benefits a research university brings to the society that sustains it, a conviction that interaction with new ideas and people who are different is valuable and necessary, and a commitment to educating students who are true citizens of the world. As the first comprehensive liberal arts and science campus in the Middle East to be operated abroad by a major American research university, NYU Abu Dhabi has been built on the following principles:

  • NYU Abu Dhabi is a research university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science college. It draws students from around the world, and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of our interconnected world.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi equips students for leadership in all arenas of human endeavor. It fosters curiosity, creativity, and critical reflection. At NYUAD, students extend themselves and the frontiers of knowledge.
  • The residential life of students is central to the University's academic mission. Learning takes place across the campus, not only in classrooms, but also in residential houses, through participation in clubs and sports, during informal campus gatherings, and being engaged with the wider community.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi stimulates advanced research. The NYUAD Institute is a major research center. Research is integral to the undergraduate experience at NYU Abu Dhabi, and it will also drive the University's graduate programs.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York form the backbone of a fully connected global network university. As one of the two major hubs in the global network, NYUAD creates a unique capacity for faculty and students to access the assets of the entire university system.
  • NYU Abu Dhabi advances the city of Abu Dhabi as a magnetic center of ideas and human talent.
