Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services to community college students from diverse backgrounds regarding transfer, degree, and career & technical education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification, and personal life management.

Committed to centering Black and African Diasporic culture.

Counsel students regarding choice of transfer institutions and necessary requirements for programs at other colleges and universities.

Manage electronic student educational plans, course placements, access to student information systems and access the internet for academic, transfer and career planning.

Teach Umojafied and additional student development counseling courses to a diverse student population.

Provide orientation for Umoja Scholars and prospective students.
Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to the areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of culturally relevant course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain positive professional relationships with faculty in instructional division(s) as assigned.

Participate in Umoja statewide and additional counseling related professional development activities.

Coordinate the Umoja learning community and build relationships across academic disciplines to support Umoja scholars’ academic success.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Maintain formal office and campus hours.

Participate in department, division, and program meetings.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.
Commitment to diversity. All applicants must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff. The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within the classroom.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Demonstrated experience counseling, teaching and/or working with disproportionately impacted students in the CA community college system or similar environment to create equitable outcomes and success for all students.

Demonstrated experience integrating elements of culturally relevant and inclusive pedagogy in and out of the classroom.

Demonstrated understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental and personal factors contributing to both the achievements and the barriers to success for African American/Black students and additional populations.

Demonstrated experience coordinating equity-minded initiatives for Black/African diasporic students and/or disproportionately impacted student populations.

Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships with campus programs and/or community agencies pertaining to Black and African American student success within the California Community College system.

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
